notes
From The Scots Peerage:
"Succeeded on the failure of the senior lines. He received a charter from King David II. of the barony of Cambusnethan 28 December 1345. Before 1371, in two charters granted by Robert Stewart, Stewart of Scotland, he is styled 'Dominus de Cruikston' and 'Dominus de Dernley,' this showing that he had succeeded to his brothers and nephew. He received a safe-conduct from King Edward III. of England 26 August 1374." [5]

Alexander Stewart of Galston (in right of his wife), almost certainly died vita patris (in the lifetime of his father) before 24 May 1402 when his son was "of Darnley," styled "filius Alexandri Senescalli de Derneley militis" about 1383 and "Dominus de Galliston" on 13 October 1390. He succeeded his father and received a charter from John, Earl of Carrick (afterwards King Robert III.)."
"Neither Sir Alexander nor his son, Alexander Stewart of Galston, married a Turnbull, as is often stated. Registrum magni sigilli regum Scotorum [supra note 7], 684 (index), incorrectly identifies his wife as Johanna (or Joneta) de Keth, who actually married his son (The Genealogist 12 [1988]: 83, Nos. 1024-25)."
