About Silsby Morse Spalding
First mayor of Beverly Hills, California. He was also the owner of the famed Tecolote Ranch near Santa Barbara. Known as a stock broker, rancher and oilman, he was also the husband of Caroline Canfield Spalding, daughter of Charles Canfield, who was an original partner with Edward Doheny in the founding of oil in Southern California. He received worldwide publicity when he appointed Will Rogers as 'honorary' mayor of Beverly Hills. The Tecolote Ranch was rated one of the most highly developed ranch properties in Santa Barbara county and was noted for its purebred cattle, horses, walnuts and citrus.
