He was a private in Captain John Walcott's company, of Spencer, at the Lexington alarm twelve days' service; private in Captain Cowle's company, Colonel Woodbridge's regiment, Sept. 30, 1775; Sergeant of Captain Earle's company, Colonel Keyes's regiment, at Camp Providence, Dec. 31, 1777; sergeant of the same company July 9, 1777, to Jan. 1778, at Providence, five months, twenty-five days (Rev. Rolls, XIII., 170; lvi., 168; xix., 15, 153-4. )

Amasa inherited the homestead of his father and grandfather.

Amasa was married first to Persis ? in 1777. They had only one child, Benjamin. Persis died in 1795. In 1796 he married Nancy Dunbar, who was 18 yrs. his junior. together they had nine children, and he died in 1842 at age 85. His wife Nancy remained in Spencer until about 1852 or 1853, at which time she moved to Beloit, Wisconsin to file for Bounty land she had coming to her because of Amasa's service in the Revolution. She moved there with her son Dexter.

By this will he says: " I further give and bequeath to my said wife, Nancy Bemis, good and sufficient meats, drinks, clothing, lodging, nursing and doctoring; also good and sufficient fire would furnished and brought in to her house at all times suitable for her fire places as she may choose, and in fine to have an be provided with everything she may need and her situation require both in sickness and health for her comfort and convenience so that she may be able to support her rank and standing in society and she has hitherto done while living with me and all this to be done and provided for her by the said Dexter Bemis, my son, during her natural life."
He wills also that " my body is to be placed in the family tomb on my orig inal home farm in Spencer, and I hereby expressly reserve said tomb f or a common family tomb with a strip of land two rods in width all around said tomb, and the privilege of passing and repassing thereto at all times. Said tomb to be the common property and for the common use as a burial place for myself and family for said Foster and Dexter Bemis and the ir families if they should choose."

[Tower:V1:121] Amasa Bemis, Sr. died Nov. 21, 1842, aged eighty-five, and his body was placed in the tomb at the old homestead as per his will, but Dexter and Amasa, his sons, concluding to remove to Wisconsin, removed the body to the old cemetery between 1853 and 1855. There was never any other occupant of the tomb except a child named Rawlings, who was placed there temporarily one winter.

John Woolcott's Co. of Rangers, which marched on the alarm of Apri l 19. 1795, from Brookfield and Spender; service 12 days." p. 932: "Bemis, Amasa; Captain John Cowl's Co., Col. Benjamin Ruggles Woodbridge's regiment; orders for bounty coat or it 's equivalent in money. Dated 12-23-1775. p. 924: "Bemis, Amasa: Spencer. Private, Captain Cowles's Co., Col. Woodbridge's regiment; Company return (probably October 1775) ; also, Sargeant, Captain Ralph Earll's Co., Colonel Danforth Keyes' regiment.; enlisted July 9, 1 777; discharged Jan.3, 1778; service 5 mos., 25 days. Roll dated Providence."

The following is his testimony of his service in the Revolution, as record ed by the Co. of Worcester, Mass., 9-6-1832, Judge Nathan Paine presiding. :
That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated:
"On or about the first day of August A.D. 1775, the said Amasa Bemis enlisted as a private soldier into a company of Massachusetts Militia command ed by Captain Cole in the regiment commanded by Col. ---- Woodbridge, marched to Cambridge near Boston, Mass., where we were put under the command of General Washington, was stationed at said Cambridge the remainder of the term being four months, and was discharged on about the first day of December the same year. Also, on the 30th of July A.D. he received a Sargeants warrant (which is here unto annexed) and enlisted as a Sargeant into a company of Foot, commanded by Captain Ralph Earll, in the Regiment commanded by Col. Danforth Keyes, marched to Providence, Rhode Island, and was stationed at Providence and other places in the vicinity, the remainder of the term being six months. Also, the said Amasa Bemis, sometime during the month of September, 1776, enlisted into a company of Massachusetts Militia as a private soldier; said company was commanded by Captain Josiah White, in the regiment commanded by Colonel Samuel Denny, th at he marched from said Spencer to Hartford, thence to New Haven, CT., thence to Terry-Town, so --- on the River Hudson, New York, and was stationed there two months. All of the above tour of duty were done in the War of the Revolution. He was born at Spencer, aforesaid, October 10, 175 7, and a record thereof is in the town records of Spencer, has lived in said Spencer ever since he was born and lives there still. Has never received a written discharge. The whole time of service as above specified is twelve months. Refers to William Pope --- Joseph Mason, Walton Livermore, and William Sumner who are my neighbors and who can state my character for truth. --- the second term of enlistment has he received a Sargent's warrant, was by mistake inserted into the place where it stands, it ought to be placed after the second term of enlistment."
