Disambiguation
Sarah (Farnsworth) Stone and Sarah (Nutting) (Farnsworth) Stone are often confused. They lived in the same area (Middlesex, Massachusetts) during similar years in the late 1600s and early 1700s. They both carried the same surnames (Farnsworth and Stone) during some period of time in their lives. They married brothers: Dea. Simon Stone, III and John Stone.
Biography
Sarah Nutting, daughter of John Nutting and Sarah Eggleston, was born 29 March 1663 in Groton, Massachusetts, and died there after 4 June 1716.
Sarah Nutting married twice:
- Mathias Farnsworth in 1681 at Groton.
- John Stone on 16 Dec 1698 at Concord.
Note
Sarah Nutting married, first, Matthias Farnsworth, son of Matthias Farnsworth in 1681, probably in Groton, MA. The Farnsworth tradition is that Matthias built a house in Groton about a quarter of a mile south of his father's house, on the same side of the way toward the mill in Groton.
Matthias Farnsworth was assigned to the Farnsworth garrison in Groton on 17 March 1692, which was organized for defense against the Indians. He probably died during the Indian wars. An inventory of his estate was taken by his wodow Sarah on 8 November 1693. Sarah (Nutting) Farnsworth was appointed administratrix of the estate on 6 December 1698. Deacon Simon Stone and his brother, John Stone, were appointed sureties upon her bond. A final account was also presented on 6 December 1698 and allowed by the Court.
Sarah (Nutting) Farnsworth married John Stone ten days after the administration of the estate of Matthias Farnsworth was completed.
She had at least six children by Matthias Farnsworth. The most notable was their son, Matthias. On 11 August 1704 he was taken prisoner by the Indians and carried into Canada, where he was delivered to the French. He was baptized into the Catholic Church in Montreal as Matthias Claude Farnet (Phaneuf). He was naturalized there, and married Catherine Charpentier there on 2 October 1713.
Death and Burial
It is unknown when Sarah died. Sarah Farnsworth Stone died 16 September 1731 and this sometimes appears incorrectly as the death of Sara Nutting Farnsworth Stone. Sarah and her husband John Stone witnessed a deed on 7 September 1715 and that is the last known record we have of Sara Nutting Stone.
Research Note
These two Sarah Stones are often confused, as they lived in the same area (Middlesex, Massachusetts) during the the late 1600s and early 1700s, they both carried the same surnames (Farnsworth and Stone) and they married brothers: Simon and John Stone.
- Sarah Farnsworth Stone (13 Feb 1657-16 Sep 1731), daughter of Matthias Farnsworth and Mary Farr, married once to Simon Stone.
- Sarah Nutting Farnsworth Stone (29 May 1663 - aft 4 Sep 1715), daughter of John Nutting and Sarah Eggleston, married first to Mathias Farnsworth, and second to John Stone. (This profile)
