About Sarah Ann 'Sallie' Ayres


Sarah Ann “Sallie” Crutcher was the daughter of Reverend Larkin and Amelia (nee Clark) Crutcher. She had several full and half-siblings.

She married James Edmond Ayres on Feb. 6, 1859 in Logan, Giles, TN. The obituary below erroneously shows his initials as "J. C.". They had the following five children:

1. Eugene Edmond Ayres, 1859–1920.
2. Jesse Isaac Ayres, 1861–1954.
3. William Sullivan Ayres, 1862–1954
4. Charles James Ayres, MD., 1863–1940
5. Mary Magdalene Ayres, 1867–1901

Mrs. J. C. Ayres Dies

Mrs. J. C. Ayres , an octogenarian living at Omega with her son Dr. Ayres and husband, died on Tuesday of dengue fever. Mrs. Ayres had been bedridden for a number of years and although infirm in body retained all her faculites to the last.

It is said of her that she was a most delightful conversationalist and endowed with a grace and charm of manner that belonged to one of her cultured estate. She is survived by her husband, Professor J. C. Ayres concerning whom a feature article appeared in our issue of November 16.
