His name appears on several Henry County VA records during this time.Family tradition holds that Samuel, Sr. was from PA originally.  They may have likely spent some time in Georgia after they left GreenbriarCo.

The first record of Samuel & Sarah in TN is 13 Dec 1794 wherethey appear in the minutes of the Big Pigeon Baptist Church as joining.  They made application for letter of dismissal on 1 Dec 1798. Anotherchurch entry is 1 Jun 1799 about "...what is to be done with RachelHuff  later Mrs. Samuel Hays for leaving the Church without a letter and marrying a man which is reported has another wife living." By 16 Dec 1800 the Smith Co. TN court minutes show the following entry "Ordered that Samuel Huff Sr. be allowed Letters of Administration toadminister on the Estate of John Lee who gave bond and security andqualified according to law."  This would seem to confirm that nobigamy was involved, since Rachel's dad administered the estate and had John Lee a wife elsewhere, the marriage to Rachel would not have been valid.17 Dec 1800 Smith Co.
