Samuel was a Revolutionary War soldier, serving as a private in Captain E. Goodale's company, Lt Col Samuel Williams' Regiment. The company marched on 11 July 1777 to join the Northern Army, and his service was for 1 month and 9 days, travel included. He again served as a private in Capt Oliver Coney's Company, Col. B. Sears' Regiment, marching on 12 August 1781 with service for 3 months and 10 days, travel included.

Samuel was a goods trader and a distiller. He and Abigail had five children. He and his wife were originally interred in Fish Hill Cemetery in Prescott, but were moved in 1939 to this cemetery in preparation for the creation of Quabbin Reservoir.
