About Samuel Andrews

SAMUEL ANDREWS / Circa 1696 - 1756

Samuel, third son of John (2) and Alice (Shaw) Andrews, was born about 1696, and resided in that part of Taunton which is now Dighton. He was a corporal in the Taunton company commanded by his nephew, Captain James Andrews, under Colonel Thacher, and died at Albany, New York, in 1756, while in service on the Crown Point expedition. In 1727 he applied to the court of general sessions for a license to sell strong liquors in Dighton, and his license was approved by the selectmen of the town. He married (first) Elizabeth Emerson, who died March 14, 1724, and (second) Mary, daughter of Ebenezer Pitts, of Dighton. There were three children of the first marriage: Samuel, Elizabeth, and Ruth, concerning whom no further record has been discovered. Children of second marriage, recorded in Dighton: Ebenezer, born January 10, 1727; John, March 13, 1729; Elkanah, March 4, 1732; Stephen, Dec. 22, 1734; Mary, Nov. 30, 1736, died young; Zephaniah, February 9, 1739; Mary, August 2, 1741; Job, April 2, 1744.

The marriage of Samuel Andrews and Mary Pitts is referenced in two entries in "Massachusetts Marriages, 1695 - 1910". The researcher may select marriage dates of either May 23, 1726 or June 2, 1726!! Mary Pitts was rather clearly "in a family way" at the time of her nuptials.......The eight children born to Samuel and Mary (Pitts) Andrews are all documented in "Massachusetts Births & Christenings, 1639 - 1910" under misspelled rubric of "Andreus" or "Andrues" -- 1.) Ebenezer "Andreus" / erroneously recorded as having been born Jan. 10, 1726 rather than the same date in 1727, 2.) John "Andrues" / born March 13, 1729, 3.) "Eleonah (Elkanah) Andrues" / born March 4, 1731, 4.) Stephen "Andrues" / born December 22, 1734, 5.) Mary I "Andrues" / born November 30, 1736, 6.) Zephaniah "Andrues" / born February 9, 1738, 7.) Mary II "Andrues" / born August 2, 1741, and 8.) Jobe "Andrues" / born April 2, 1744. Per source, all children were born in Dighton, Massachusetts.

Particulars regarding the deaths and interments of Samuel Andrews and Mary (Pitts) Andrews elude documentation, as do particulars regarding the lives of the majority of their children.

The notable exception is Captain Elkanah Andrews / 1731 or 1732 - 1787. Captain Elkanah Andrews married Alice Beal / 1739 - 1808. Captain Elkanah and Alice (Beal) Andrews were parents to four children -- 1.) Alice (Andrews) Smith / 1758 - 1811, 2.) Elkanah Andrews / 1758 - 1811, 3.) Joseph Andrews / 1764 - 1803, and 4.) Job Andrews / 1779 - 1799. Captain Andrews passed away June 11, 1787, whilst on commercial voyage, in Essequibo, British Guiana. Captain Andrews is interred, along with his wife and all four children, at the Unitarian Church Cemetery in Dighton, Massachusetts.
