About Robert Samuel Todd, I

Discoveries of the Todd DNA Project... The 1905 published history of the Mary Todd Lincoln Family summarized the origins of the family as contained in a letter written by a grandson of the Robert Todd 1697-1775 which stated that two half-brothers Robert Todd and Andrew Todd came to New York and then Robert came to Pennsylvania and Andrew followed. Research confirmed Robert’s arrival in Pennsylvania by 1755 and Andrew’s arrival in 1760. However, the account books of the Janeway Store in Bound Brook New Jersey plus later court records showed there were 5 Todd brothers: Robert, William, John, James and Andrew,

ROBERT TODD.

My great, great, great, great grandfather, Robert Todd was born in Ireland, in 1G07; died in Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, in 1775, and was buried in the churchyard of the Providence Presbyterian Church. His first wife, whose na me is supposed to have been Smith, died and was buried in Ireland. In Ireland he married, for a second wife, Isabella, sister of General William Bodley. The mother of Isabella and General Wm, Bodlev was a Parker, a name which belongs to many families of note fn Pennsylvania. Hy his first wife he had two sons, John and Datid. By the second wife he had five sons and four daughters, William, Andrew, Robert, Samuel, Levi, Elizabeth, Mary, Rebecca and Sarah. David Todd, my great, great, great grandfather, the second son of Robert Todd, was born in Ireland, April, 8th, 1723, and when a child, was brought by his father to Pennsylvania. His wife, whom he married in Pennsylvania, was Hannah Owen, of Welsh decent and a Quakeress. They had four sons and two daughters, John, Robert, Levi, Owen, Elizabeth and Hannah.

Page of notes on Todd-McMurtry connection: (1) David Todd had a sister Nancy Todd md to Joseph McMurtry and a sister Elizabeth Todd md Samuel McMurtry of North Carolina. Nancy Todd children: Elizabeth McMurtry md Lusk, Joseph McMurtry, William McMurtry; Elizabeth Todd’s children: John McMurtry whose son was Dr. Joseph McMurtry of Paris, KY. (Ed Note: Myra McMurtry was the daughter of Dr. Joseph McMurtry. These notes seem to be a garbled version of the Todd-McMurtry connections that were provided to Myra by Dr. S.S. Todd in the 1880s. However, these notes do not seem to be Myra’s handwriting. It would be valuable to determine whose handwriting this is, because it could be the source of the tradition that Dr. Wm McMurtry of Oakland, CA reported that Nancy McMurtry was a great-grandaunt of Mary Todd Lincoln. … The note would suggest that Joseph and William McMurtry were cousins to John McMurtry and that they were all cousins to the PA-KY Todds. There are many errors in this note. The father of Elizabeth, Joseph and William McMurtry was James McMurtry, not Joseph McMurtry. Samuel McMurtry was the brother of John McMurtry, not his son. Elizabeth Todd, sister of David Todd, married James Parker, not Samuel McMurtry.)

===================================================
Written by John McFarland, son of Arthur McFarland and Elizabeth Todd, Montgomery County, PA, May 27, 1833 and given to Emily Todd Helm in 1880.

Robert Todd and Isabella his wife together with five children came from Ireland to America about the year 1737 and had three children born afterwards. Two of the sons, viz. John and David were by a former wife; the second wife to wit Isabella had three sons and four daughters, Mary, Elizabeth, Robert, Sarah, William, Rebecca and Andrew. John the older son became a presbyterian preacher and settled in Virginia where he raised his family and left several daughters and one son called John who also became a preacher. David the second son settled in Montgomery County, Pensylvania in Providence township, raised four sons and two daughters to wit John, Robert, Levi, Owen, Elizabeth and Hannah. Mary the oldest daughter married James Parker and had children four sons and four daughters raised in the same place.

Elizabeth the second daughter married William Parker the brothers of James who died leaving her a widow with one son and one daughter the son left no son, the daughter married Gen Andrew Porter and raised children, the widow Parker married Arthur McFarland and raised four children to wit Margaret, Mary John and James.

Robert Todd the younger raised his family in Chester County to wit three sons and three daughters to wit Isabella, John, Margaret, Robert, David and Mary. The whole family of David Todd the older and the family of James Parker settled in Kentucky also Robert the son of Robert the younger. William the third son of Robert Todd, senr settled in Westmoreland Pennsylvania and Andrew the youngest son of R. Todd snr remained in Montgomery County Pa. Also the children of Elizabeth and Arthur McFarland. Sarah Todd the third daughter of Robert married John Findlay Rebecca the fourth daughter married Robert Major, the children of both of the foregoing migrated westward.

Andrew Todd half brother of Robert Todd mentioned in the foregoing page came to America from Ireland at the same time 1737 a young man. They both landed at new york, Robert and his family came immediately to Philadelphia County (now Montgomery County) Pennsylvania, Andrew remained in york state where he married the widow McDowel and had several children, afterward removed to Chester county Pennsylvania where he remained until his children scattered then went to Bedford PA with his son William and his other children went to Kentucky.

The foregoing is written by the undersigned as what he believes to be the traditional geneally of the family as received in part from his mother and in part from his own knowledge.

The increase and migrations since their settlement in Kentucky he is not particularly informed of.

RECORD:

1. Emilie and Katherine Helm , TODD & HELM FAMILY PAPERS.
, http://beauproductions.com/marylincoln/biography/geneology.htm. NOTOE Emilie and Katherine protected, and often changed, ages of women in the family. Emilie’s grandmother commented that a woman’s age was a ‘changeable number," and Emilie heeded her grandmother’s advice on several occasions. Even in census records, Emilie changed her daughters’ ages. To further protect their age, Emilie listed family members by listing all the male children in their order of birth, and then listing the female children in their birth order. Here, when information is available, the lists have been changed from Emilie’s original order to placing the children in their descending order of birth. If information is not available, the lists have been left as Emilie originally wrote them. " ROBERT TODD (John, James) b. 1697 d. April 3, 1775. He came to America in 1737 with his brother Andrew. Miscelleanous Data -

The trail is iffy from here. Upward, two sets of parents were listed but John Todd makes more sense since he is placed in Ireland at the time of birth. Downward, the children are listed under both spouses. Comparing the dates I believe the first two were born to Ann and then the rest to Isabella. Looks like the entire family immigrated to the US, with Ann's children going to VA and Isabella's to PA. --SPF
