Robert McIlrath/McLewrath served as armorer for the State of South Carolina during the American Revolutionary War.
Per descendant John Ladson:
"Served in the Revolutionary War. He wa twice taken prisoner by the British and was in prison in St. Augustine, FL twice. Both times he escaped. He was Armorer for the State of South Carolina during the Revolutionary War. Governor Rudledge commissioned him to make the type for the Declaration of War since the British had seized all the printing presses."
