Excerpts from "Moffit Family" page 382 and 383 of "The Heritage of Randolph County North Carolina Volume 1 1993" LDS call number 975.661 H2h v. 1
"Adam, William, Hugh, James, Charles, John, Robert, Margaret, and Mary came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Ireland sometime before 1750. The record is unclear as to whether the parents, Robert and Margaret, came with them or not. They stayed in the Philadelphia area for several years and then five of the brothers moved to the southeast section of what is now Randolph county and the western part of Chatham County, N.C.
William and Charles settled on the waters of Richland Creek in the area where Moffitt's Mill was developed. Moffitt's Mill was for many years a very prosperous and influential area of Randolph County, and many Moffitts from this line became industrialists, mill owners, and successful business people. "

2. ROBERT BRUCE2 MOFFAT (CHARLES1) was born Abt. 1710 in Moffetts Wells, Dumfries, Scotland, and died 1783 in Ulster, Ireland ?. He married MARGARET STEWART Abt. 1732 in Northern Ireland or Moffetts Wells, Scotland. She was born Abt. 1720 in England, and died in Ireland.
Notes for ROBERT BRUCE MOFFAT:
Came to America through Virginia and settled in Randolph NC area
Others say died in Ireland abt 1760 (Ulster, Ireland?)
DOB may be 1705
According to Kay Frances Suckow, after the marriage of Robert Bruce Moffat & Margaret Stuart in Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland, they moved to County Donegal, Ireland where their children were born. Six of his sons went to America. Of those five stayed, one was to return to Ireland, but died at sea.
One family tradition which accounts for the change of spelling of name---when the sons went to America they agreed to adopt the "itt" at the end of the name to identify them wherever the name was found as belonging to the Robert Moffitt/Moffat line.
It is likely that the Moffats were originally from Moffat, Dumfries, Scotland, the ancestral home of the Moffat Clan. They quite likely migrated to Ireland during the Plantation periods of the 17th Century.

GEDCOM Note
William Joseph MOFFITT was born about 1740 in the Derryveagh Mountains on the north western seaboard of northern Ireland. This is a mountain area exposed to the Atlantic Ocean with a stunning coastline of golden beaches, dramatic cliffs and windswept peninsulas. William is the son of Robert Bruce MOFFITT and his wife Margaret STUART of Moffatt Wells, Dumfries-shire, Scotland. This Scottish couple had migrated into Donegal, Donegal County, Ulster, Ireland from Scotland where their children including William Joseph MOFFITT were all born.
William Joseph MOFFITT was an immigrant to America most likely in his late teens as a single man to perhaps Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was probably attracted to and part of the William Penn Quaker movement. No doubt William travelled the Great Wagon Road from Philadelphia and joined many other Quaker families in the Cane Creek Settlement, Snow Camp, Colonial Orange (now Alamance) County, North Carolina in the early 1760,s.
William Joseph MOFFITT age 23 married 02 Apr 1763 in the Cane Creek Meeting House in Colonial Orange (now Alamance)County, North Carolina to Mary DAVIS age 22 of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
The eight known children of this couple are:
1. Naomi (Moffat) MOFFITT, b. 11 Jun 1763; d. 19 Mar 1840 2. Catherine MOFFITT, b. 05 Apr 1765; d. 09 Mar 1848 3. Hannah MOFFITT, b. 22 Dec 1771; d. 1842 4. Mary MOFFITT, b. 1773; d. 26 Mar 1795 5. Margaret MOFFITT, b. 1774; d. 1853 6. Robert MOFFITT, b. 06 Oct 1778; d. 06 Oct 1844 7. William MOFFITT, b. 1781; d. 13 Nov 1842 8. David MOFFITT, b. 04 Feb 1785; d. 24 May 1854 From Find a Grave
