About Richard Kimball, of Wenham

Biography

Retrieved from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kimball-494 and then edited

Richard Kimball was born at Watertown, Mass., Oct. 1643; died at Wenham, July 30, 1715. He was the son of Henry Kimball and Mary Riddlesdale. He worked as a farmer.

He went from Watertown, with his parents, to Ipswich, Mass.,and from thence went to Wenham, where he afterwards lived. On May 13, 1667, he married Rebecca Abbe.[1][2]

Rebecca Abbe (or Abbey) was born about 1647 in Wenham, the daugher of John Abbe (d. 1700) and his wife Mary. Rebecca (Abbe) Kimball died June 1704.

Richard Kimball married second, Nov. 20, 1706, the widow Ford of Ipswich, Mass.

He was one of the administrators of his father's estate. In 1715 he testified that he remembered that Walter Fairfield Sr. had a house within the bounds of Ipswich before 1661 in which Richard Coy lived as a tenant.

Children of Rebecca and Richard Kimball

  1. Rebecca- b. 20 Dec. 1668 Wenham, m. 12 Apr. 1694 James Poland (b.c. 1655, d.c. 1722), d. after 25 Sept. 1712
  2. Mary- b. 26 June 1674, d. Feb. 1704
  3. Caleb- m. 15 June 1704 Wells, ME, Susannah Cloyes. No proof of Caleb's connection to Richard of Wenham has been found, however, he is about the only Kimball who could possibly be his father. Also, given the naming conventions of the time, Caleb named his first son after his wife's father, his second son after his father and the third son after himself. Also, a complete list of Richard of Wenham's children has not been found. Richard is about the only Kimball who would have been the correct age to have a son born at the right time. Henry had a son Caleb, however, he was killed at Bloody Brook during King Philip’s War in 1675 and there is no marriage for this Caleb and his estate was divided among his siblings which would go against him having a young family who would need support. The Caleb Kimball of Ipswich did have a son Caleb (and a string of Calebs after that), however, they are all accounted for in the Ipswich and West Newbury records as well as in Exeter. There was a Caleb in Buxton, however, his dates are wrong having been born in 1709 and died in 1767. So, we are left with Caleb being the son of Richard of Wenham… but the question mark remains.
  4. Abigail- b. 12 Mar. 1680, m. 20 Apr. 1698 Joseph Hibbard (b. 15 May 1678 Wenham, d. 28 Feb. 1755 Windham, CT), d. 5 Dec. 1756 Windham, CT

Disputed Relationships

It was thought that Jane was the widow Forde that married second, Richard Kimball, of Wenham, intentions published on November 30, 1706 at Ipswich, as his second wife. [1] Her father, however, names the ‘children of my daughter Jeane Forde’ (not Jeane Kimball) in his will of 1725/6.[5]
