About Richard Dodge, of Dodge Row

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dodge-191

Richard, son of John Dodge, was born about 1602 in England. He was in Salem, Mass. as early as 1638 and lived for a time on land of his brother, William Dodge, then settled in Dodge Row, Beverly, Mass., not far east of Wenham Lake.

The house that he built stood probably where Lucius R. Dodge lately lived [this was pub. in 1910], near the north line of Beverly. He and his wife, Edith, were members of the Wenham church before 1648. In 1653 he was one of the subscribers to the Harvard College fund, his name being first on the list and for the largest sum in his town. He gave a lot of land for the burial ground on Dodge Row, and his gift was further confirmed by deeds from the three sons of his son, Edward, who died in 1687.

He died June 15, 1671, leaving what was a large estate for his day, valued at one thousand seven hundred and sixty-four pounds and two shillings. He gave to his sons, John, Richard and Samuel, each a good farm, valued in the inventory at over a hundred pounds each. To his sons, Edward and Joseph, he gave the homestead and provided carefully for his widow. She died June 27, 1678, aged seventy-five.

Children:

  • 1. John, baptized Dec. 29, 1631, in England.
  • 2. Mary, born 1632.

  • 4. Richard, born 1643.

She and her husband, Richard Dodge, are considered pioneers of Essex County, Massachusetts.

Her maiden name is BRAYNE. Edith is often wrongly sourced as having had maiden name of Woodbury -per Norman Dodge, findagrave contributor "even the Woodbury family will tell you he {Richard Dodge} did not marry a Woodbury. This is likely most often due to the book 'Pioneers of Massachusetts' by Charles Henry Pope, 1st published in 1900 and reprinted in 2009, ISBN #ISBN: 9780806307749.

Husband Richard created the family cemetery on their farmland which became known as "Dodge Row" and their graves are not marked in modern day (2009) both Edith and Richard's are remembered at that family cemetery, but their exact location of burial is not known.

There is a site on the Web operated by The Mary and John Clearing House. They track information about the first immigrants to come to MA on the Mary and John. One of those immigrants was Richard Dodge. The Clearing House has published a series of reports summarizing research that has been done. Their Website indicated that Volume 26 of this series included new information confirming that Richard Dodge had two wives. I finally was able to review a copy of Volume 26. The second wife is known to be Edith Woodbury, but they propose that his first wife was Edith Brayne.

They have a professional researcher named Robin Bush who is reported to have found a record of marriage for Richard Dodge of Middle Chinnock to Edith Bra(-) at Stoke-sub-Hamdon dated 5 May 1628. The brides full name was lost because of damage to the original document, but some testing suggests the next letter was a "y" and research of local records found two possible candidates. One was dispensed with as being married to someone else ( and she seems a bit too old). Birth records for the other candidate indicate she was baptized 17 May 1608 at Stoke.

The conclusions proposed by the Clearing House suggest that Edith Brayne was the first wife of Richard, and the mother of his first three children. They further propose that Edith Brayne was the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Braine/Brayne of Stoke-sub-Hamdon. Based on a search of local records, Edward is said to be the son of Thomas Braine "the elder" and Joan Hickes (daughter of John Hickes).

Richard, son of John and Margery Dodge was born about 1602 in England. He married in England to Edith (maiden name uncertain, but may be Brayne). Some of their children were born in England before the couple immigrated to America's Massachusetts Bay Colony, in Salem, as early as 1638. Richard was the 2nd Dodge to arrive in America, following his brother, William, who came in 1629.

He lived for a time on land of his brother, William, then settled in Dodge Row, Beverly, Mass., not far east of Wenham Lake. They received an 80 acre land grant disposed by the village of Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts in the area adjacent to Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts in 1638;

He was a farmer as were many in that inland area away from the Salem waterfront and village. The house that he built stood probably where Lucius R. As an original Dodge owner of the land which became "Dodges Row Cemetery," this family cemetery is on Dodge family land of his lifetime, although his burial site is not here. A headstone tribute was placed for him in 1962.

According to the Dodge Genealogy,

Richard Dodge, "appeared at Salem in 1638, and 'desired accomodation.' It was learned in 1881 from the Parish register of East Coker, Somersetshire, England, that in 1628, Richard, son of Richard, was bapt. date missing. Sept. 7, 1630, Margery, dau. of Richard, was bapt. Feb. 2, 1630-1, Margery, dau. of Richard, was buried. Dec. 29, 1631, John, son of Richard was baptized. April 19, 1635, Marie, dau. of Richard and Edith was baptized.

"As immigrants were admitted to the colony only by applying to the town and obtaining leave, it is quite certain that Richard and his family came in 1638, and as the King was at that time obstructing emigration, it is probable that he left England without royal permission.

"After living awhile on the land of his brother William, he settled on 'Dodge Row' in North Beverly, not far east of Wenham Lake. The house he built stood probably where Mr. Lucius B. Dodge lately lived very near the present north line of Beverly, or possibly where Mr. H. W. Dodge now lives, a few rods farther east. The farm lately owned by Mr. Lucius B. Dodge was inherited from his father Richard, the son of Deacon Richard b., 1783, who bought it of his father-in-law, Jacob Edwards, b. 1746, by deed dated 23 April, 1819. Apparently the same land was bought by John Edwards, of Edward Dodge, cordwainer, Beverly, 15 March, 1781.

"It had been held in the male line from the death of Richard1. Mr. Lucius B. Dodge says the house now occupied by Mr. H. W. Dodge was formerly used as a cabinet shop by his father Richard, and by him turned partly around and converted into a dwelling. It is unlikely that either house is as old as 200 years.

"Richard1, the immigrant, evidently gave his attention more to farming and the care of his domestic affairs, than to town or church business; although he was a loyal church member, and one of the most liberal contributors to the support of the church. He and his with Edith were members of the Wenham church before 1648 according to its records, John Fiske being pastor.

"He also has a high appreciation of the value of education, for in 1653, in a list of twenty-one subscribers to Harvard College, his name ranks first, while the next largest sum was only one-fourth as much as his. He dedicated a piece of his land to a burying ground, which is now known as the Cemetery on Dodge Row. It was probably inherited by his son Edward, who died in 1727, for in February, 1730-1, the three sons of Edward, by a deed, confirmed the grant to their relatives and neighbors. The [p. 17] near neighbors of Richard1 were Zechary Herrick who married his daughter Mary, Peter Woodberry who married Sarah, John and Humphrey Woodberry and John Galle. He died 15th June, 1671, leaving an estate valued at the large sum of 1764 2s. He gave his sons John, Richard and Samuel each a good farm, valued in his inventory at over 100 each. To sons Edward and Joseph he gave the home farm, valued at 1000. To his wife Edith he gave certain appropriate personal property, 'to be her own absolutely,' and gave her 'the sole and proper use of the parlor & chamber over it in my now dwelling house,' and made liberal provision for annual payments to be made to her by her five sons. She outlived him seven years, dying 27th June, 1678, at the age of 75. (For wills, see appendix.) From this it is probable that Richard may have been born about 1602, and was about two years older than William. Edith, before her death, also made a will, and the inventory discloses a very comfortable state of worldly affairs. No grave stones, however, discolse their resting place." A list of their children follows, but the list of children does not seem to include the first two children, Richard and Margery, mentioned in the narrative, above, and lists Mary b. 1632 rather than Marie bapt. 1635. This discrepancy is nowhere explained.

After moving to America, Richard and Edith lived on William's land for awhile but moved to 'Dodge Row' in North Beverly, not far from Wenham Lake. DODGE FAMILY According to the book "Colonial Families of the United States of America: Vol I", the founder of the Dodge family was Peter Dodge of the town of Stopworth, in the County of Chester; gentleman; who did such loyal and valiant service for the good content of his Sovereign Lord, King Edward I, that he and his heirs forever were entitled to have, use, and enjoy a coat of arms fully described in a Patent dated 8th April, 1306, in the Herald's College. His descendant, John Dodge of Rotham, in Kent, was granted in 1547 a confirmation of the early Patent. Originally supplied 8 March 2013 by jmchugh2717174 Moved here to preserve content.

! Records compiled by Clara Coburn Hearn There are conflicting stories about John Dodge who married and had a daughter Deliverance who married John Parker. There were probably two Johns and both married a "Sarah". Richard Dodge, bn abt 1602 in East Coker, Somerset Co., England married Edith (...), bn 1603. They came to America in 1629 and were admitted to the church in 1644. He was one of the founders of the Beverly Church. He died in 1672. His will was written in 1670 and he died 15 Jun 1672. It mentions two brothers in England, William and Michael, also a daughter Mary, wife of Zachary Herrick, and daughter Sarah who married Peter Woodbury. His wife died, according to probate records of Essex Co. Massachusetts 14 Feb 1677 but another source says she died 27 Jun 1678. Sources: Parker Hist.
