About Rfn. John Archibald Stewart
John Archibald Stewart was born at Paddington in the Woolahra area of New South Wales, Australia on 13 September 1874. His father was John Archibald Stewart of Glasgow and Mary Stewart of Edinburgh who had emigrated to Australia prior to 1874. John emigrated to New Zealand and married Jane McDiarmid at Palmerston North on 15 February 1911 (reg. 1911/1132). They had two children, John in 1911 and Percy in 1913. During World War I John served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 3rd Battalion.He was killed in action at Les Quesnoy on 4 November 1918. 44-year-old John is remembered on the Grévillers New Zealand Memorial. John's father is though to have been the subject of a coroner's inquest in December 1918, having died in Sydney Hospital following an accident. His mother has not yet been traced. Jane remarried to Arthur Hall in 1920. She died at Ōhope on 6 January 1924 and was buried in the Domain Road Cemetery at Whakatāne. Bio by Debbie McCauley (7 October 2024).
