About Reverend Joseph Wasson
Leader of the early defunct Christian congregation known as the “Wassonites”, part of “The Restoration Movement” loosely associated with the religious movement the “Camblelites”
Arrived in Gibson Co., Indiana before 1820. He migrated from Maury County, TN.
Listed as one of the first settlers in New Harmony area from account books at local store.
An 1875 newspaper article states he had a "stump mill."
A Christian Church [as opposed to the earlier Methodist church?] was started on Black River in 1815 by Joseph Wasson and James Murphy. (New Harmony Newspaper, 1875). His adherents were Primitive Baptists, called Wassonites (see Posey Co IN History). Other sources state church co-founded with James McCreary.
