Abraham Cohen (editor)

Abraham Cohen (born 1887, Reading, Berkshire; died 1957) was a Jewish-British scholar. [1]

He was the editor of the Soncino Books of the Bible and also participated in the Soncino translation of the Talmud and Midrash. [2] [3]

He attended the University of London and Cambridge and was a minister of Birmingham Hebrew Congregation from 1933. He also participated actively in the World Jewish Congress and the Zionist movement. [4]

Anglo-Jewish clergyman, scholar, and communal leader, Dr. MA, PhD, D.H.L. He grew up in the East End of London, and was educated at London and Cambridge Universities. He became a minister in Manchester in 1909 and in 1913 minister to the Birmingham Hebrew Congregation, where he remained for 36 years. He was active in the World Jewish Congress and in the Zionist movement. He was the first minister to preside over the Board of Deputies of British Jews (from 1949 to 1955), which he greatly strengthened by a combination of firmness and diplomacy. He edited the Soncino (municipality) Books of the Bible, himself translating the Psalms, and participated in the Soncino translation of the "Talmud and Midrash." His writings include "Everyman's Talmud" (1949 2 ), An Anglo-Jewish Scrapbook (1968 2 ), and "Teachings of Maimonides" (1927). He assisted Chief Rabbi Joseph.
