The nephew of the man who became President James Monroe, this James was named after him ("James Monroe, Jr.") inasmuch as James Monroe's only son had died at one year of age. James, Jr. traveled with President Monroe in 1817-19 on one of the first "nationwide" tours made by a president. Also along was another presidential nephew, Samuel Gouverneur.
