~Burke's A Genealogical History of the Dormant, Abeyant, Forfeited, Peerages of the British Empire, 1866 Edition, p. 74, calls this Ralph de Brereton, son of Willdiam de Brereton and grandson of William de Brereton. Besides his son and heir, Sir William, he was the father of Gilbert and a daughter Isolda, wife of Gilbert de Stoke. 843

• Dates & Events. 696 There is a record from about 1087, in the reign of William Rufus, when a charter, given Gilbert de Venables, was witnessed by Ralph de Brereton. These parchments, with their signatures and seal, still exist (in 1919) among the town and church records of Cheshire.

- About 1176, Ralph de Brereton, a grand-son of the first Ralph, is witness in a grant of Marton to Richard de Davenport.
- About 1194, William de Brereton, son of this last Ralph, received a deed at the time of his marriage to Margery, daughter of Randle de Torhaunt, eight witnesses signing the contract. This William was knighted by Henry III in 1208, the beginning of honors held in the Brereton family for over five hundred years.
- In 1216, Sir Ralph de Brereton, son of William, granted land to "Brereton" church, as shown by parish records still in existence.
