Wikipedia: John Russell (knight) states that the "parentage and ancestry of Russell is unknown ... fictitious progeny ... include the Russell Dukes of Bedford. ... various elaborate and fanciful Russell pedigrees were produced ... with ancestry stretching back to the feudal barony and beyond. Thus did the unrelated and comparatively minor family of John Russell of Kingston Russell fall to the attention of ... genealogists ... Where genealogical links could not be found or proved, researchers invented them. ...
The pedigree invented by the York Herald Le Neve for Edward Russell, 3rd Earl of Bedford (d. 1627), was further embellished by Jeremiah Wiffen whose deliberately fictitious 1833, "Historical Memoirs of the House of Russell", (see eBook [1]%29 connected the Duke's family to John Russell of Kingston Russell by inventing a second marriage with progeny for Sir Theobald Russell (d.1341), great-grandson of John Russell. The fraud is described by Round (1901), in "The Origin of the Russells".[2] (see eBook[3])
