About Pte. William Welsh

Brother of Margaret Welsh, Prince Echo Street, Kirkdale, Liverpool [Prince Edwin Street Liverpool?].
Spent 15 months with the Cape Town Highlanders in South Africa.
Worked as a labourer for Mr. Lennox of Morrinsville.
Wounded in France 16 September 1916. Transferred from Hornchurch to Codford.
Died of wounds at the No. 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station.
William Welsh was one of 28 New Zealand servicemen who were court-martialled and sentenced to death during the First World War. The Court Martial was later re-assembled and his charge reduced to Absence Without Leave. He was then sentenced to two years' Imprisonment with Hard Labour. He was sent to prison, but was Killed in Action on 5 October 1917 after returning to the line. Source: Pugsley, 'On the Fringe of Hell', pp. 350-51.
