About Pte. Peter McLay
Peter McLay was born at Balclutha in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island on 17 July 1877. His parents were Moses McLay and Catherine McLay (nee McOnie) who had married at Killearn in Stirling, Scotland on 25 January 1861 before emigrating to New Zealand. On 1 March 1916 Peter and Ruby Ada Winteringham married in Wellington. During World War I Peter served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He was wounded in action and died of those wounds at the No. 2 Canadian Stationary Hospital in France. Peter was buried in the Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No. 1 [VI. G. 42.]. Ruby died in Wellington on 26 June 1966 and was buried in Karori Cemetery (Bio: Debbie McCauley, 2/6/2024).
