About Pte. Halfdan Olaf Hansen
Halfdan Olaf Hansen was born at Tønsberg in Norway on 9 February 1883, and baptised at Sem in Vestfold on 18 March 1883. His parents were Mathias Hansen (b. 1851) and Olava Hansen (b. 1856) who had married at Sem on 11 February 1881. When Halvdan was naturalised in New Zealand on 7 November 1908, he gave his occupation as bridge carpenter. He worked as a carpenter for the Timaru Harbour Board and lived at 110 King Street in Timaru. During World War I Halfdan served with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion (Service No. WWI 6/1865). He was wounded in Gallipoli on 10 August 1915 and died of his wounds three days later. 32-year-old Halfdan was buried in the Lancashire Landing Cemetery [K.30].
