About Pte. Alexander Dewar
Alexander Dewar was born at Totara, Otago, in New Zealand's South Island on 24 September 1890 (reg. 1890/17461). His parents were William Dewar (c. 1845-1924) and Margaret Dewar (nee Blackie) (1855-1940) who had married in 1880. Alexander joined the Otago Infantry Regiment during World War I (Service No. WWI 15148). His brother, Davidson Blackie Dewar, died of wounds at the 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station in France on 11 December 1916. Alexander was killed in action at Ypres on 3 December 1917. He was buried in the Hooge Crater Cemetery in Belgium (bio by Debbie McCauley, 29 January 2022).
