Osbern (or Osborn or Osbert) Fitz Richard (or Fitz Scrop or Fitz Scrob or Le Scrope), son of Richard Fitz Scrob and brother of William Fitz Richard, was born in Richard's Castle in Herefordshire, near Shropshire, England.

He appears to have been old enough to have taken part in the early wars of his father during the reign of Edward the Confessor (1042-66). Osbern was sheriff of Hereford, 1060. He assisted the castellan of Hereford in subduing the rebel Edric in 1067 while William the Conqueror and the greater part of his nobles were in Normandy.

He married Nest ap Gruffyd ap Llwelyn (1039-64). They had children:

   * Agnes (living in the years 1088-1121+) - of marriageable age in 1088, married Bernard Neufmarche' (living in the years 1085-1121)

   * Hugh Fitz Osbern (living in the years 1130-1140) - married Estache Say (II.1135); they had a son:

         o Osbern Fitz Hugh (living in the years 1140-1185/86) - married Amicia Clifford; they had a son:

               + William

   * Turstin (II.1130)

   * Simon Scrope - had a son:

         o Walter Scrope - had a son:

RICHARD'S CASTLE, WITH THE TOWNSHIPS OF WOOFERTON, OVERTON, BATCHCOTT & MOOR. RICHARD'S CASTLE is a large parish, partly in Herefordshire and partly in Shropshire. The village of Richard's Castle is in Herefordshire, and is situated on the old road from Ludlow to Leominster, about 4 miles S.S.W. of Ludlow, 6½ N. of Leominster, and 21 N. of Hereford. The part of the parish of Richard's Castle in Salop includes the townships of Batchcott, Overton, and Wooferton. The Herefordshire portion is in Wolphy hundred, Ludlow union and county court district, Brimfield polling district, and Leominster petty sessional division. The total population of the parish in 1861 was 710; in 1871, 755, viz., 322 in Herefordshire and 433 in Shropshire. The inhabited houses numbered 148, viz., 68 in Herefordshire and 80 in Shropshire. The families or separate occupiers numbered 155; viz., 68 in Herefordshire and 87 in Shropshire. The total area of the parish is 4,871 acres, viz., 2,446 in Herefordshire and 2,425 in Shropshire.

The soil is loamy, producing wheat, beans, barley, roots, and pasture. Alfred Salwey, Esq., is lord of the manor. In this parish are the ruins of a castle which was erected before the Conquest by a Norman, named Richard Fitz-Scrob, in the reign of Edward the Confessor, upon a site to which he was doubtless attracted by the existence of a lofty mound, one of the most remarkable features in the earthworks of (probably) the 10th century. At the period of Domesday survey, it was possessed by Osborne Fitz-Richard, whose granddaughter Margaret conveyed it, by marriage, to Robert de Mortimer, from whose family, by an heiress also, it passed to the Talbots, and subsequently to the Salweys. ...

He md Nesta verch Gruffydd abt 1072, daughter of Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, Prince of North Wales, King of Gwynedd and Powys, and Aldgyth/Edith. Children of Osborn Fitz Richard and Nesta verch Gruffydd were: Hugh Fitz Osborn b abt 1078. Nesta b abt 1082, Herefordshire, England. She md Bernard de Neufmarche, Baron of Brecnoch, abt 1095.

He married Nesta verch Gruffyd, daughter of Gruffyd ap Llywelyn, Brenin Cymru and Ealdgyth of Mercia, before 1080.

He died after 1100.

Osbern Fitz Richard, landowner, Richard's (Fitz Scrob) son, owned an estate abutting his father's during the latter's lifetime, including a large tract on the border probably reconquered from the Welsh by Earl Harold (Godwineson) in 1063 / 64. Osbern added greatly to it under Norman rule: by inheritance from his father; by gift from King William, especially in Worcestershire and Warwickshire; by marriage to Nest, daughter of Gruffyd ap Llywelyn (King of Wales 1055 - 1063) and Ealdgyth (Edith of Mercia, later wife of Earl Harold Godwineson and last Saxon "queen" of England), Earl Aelfgar of Mercia's daughter, which seems to have brought him five valuable Mercian manors; and by taking manors as a tenant of the bishop of Worcester, the sheriff of Gloucester, and the Earl of Shrewsbury. The last connection, with Roger de Montgomery, was perhaps the key to his success. It is striking that an apparently independent and wealthy baron was in 1085 in the Earl's household.......By 1086 Osbern's manors straggled from the Welsh border as far as Worcester and Warwick, with outliers in Nottinghamshire and Bedfordshire; they were worth over 100 pounds a year, more than three times his and his father's combined value in 1066. He was especially important in Worcestershire, where in the 1080's he was a judge alongside the sheriff and Geoffrey, Bishop of Coutances, in a case between the Bishop of Worcester and Evesham Abbey. He was also a benefactor of Worcester.......Osbern joined the Welsh marcher rebellion of 1088, but was not one of those whose calculations were complicated by property in Normandy and he was later loyal to William II (King William Rufus, son of William the Conqueror / King William I), HIS HONOUR OF RICHARD'S CASTLE (i.e. Burford barony) PASSING ON HIS DEATH AT AN UNKNOWN DATE INTACT TO HIS DESCENDENTS.
