Project MedLands Norway Nobility, Chapter 6, DESCENDANTS of EILIV
EILIV, son of ---. m as her second husband, RAGNHILD Haakonsdatter, widow of SKOPTI Skagasson, daughter of HAAKON Sigurdsson "the Mighty" Jarl, Regent of Norway & his wife Thora Skagadotter. Snorre names Ragnhild as an illegitimate daughter of Haakon whom her father married to "Skopte Skagason, a brother of Thora" (the latter being Haakon's wife)[191]. Morkinskinna names “Ingibjorg, daughter of Hákon jarl” as mother of “one of King Magnus´s chieftains…Ormr”[192]. Snorre names Orm as the son of "Ragnhild, a daughter of Earl Hakon the Great"[193].
Eiliv & his wife RAGNHILD Haakonsdatter had one child:
- 1. ORM Eilivsson (-1055]). Snorre names Orm as the son of "Ragnhild, a daughter of Earl Hakon the Great"[194]. A later passage confirms that the mother of "Earl Orm Eilifson" was "Ragnhild, a daughter of Earl Hakon the Great"[195]. Morkinskinna names “Ingibjorg, daughter of Hákon jarl” as mother of “one of King Magnus´s chieftains…Ormr”[196]. Jarl in Oplandene. m SIGRID Finsdatter, daughter of FIN Arnesson & his wife Thorberg Halfdansdatter. Snorre records that "Sigrid, Fin [Arnason]'s daughter" was married to "Earl Orm"[197].
Orm & his wife SIGRID Finsdatter had two children:
- RAGNA Ormsdotter . Snorre names "Ragna, a daughter of Earl Orm Eilifson and Sigrid, a daughter of Earl Fin Arnason" as mother of "Otto"[203]. m SVEN Svensson, son of ERLING of Gerd & his wife ---.
- OGMUND Ormsson . Snorre names "Ogmund…a son of Earl Orm Eilifson and Sigrid, a daughter of Earl Fin Arnason"[198]. m ---. The name of Ogmund´s wife is not known.
Ogmund & his wife had two children:
- i) MUNAN Ogmundsson (-killed in battle 1137). Snorre names Munan son of "Ogmund…a son of Earl Orm Eilifson and Sigrid, a daughter of Earl Fin Arnason", when recording his death in battle against the supporters of Inge King of Norway[199].
- ii) ASTRID Ogmundsdatter . Snorre names "Astrid, Ogmund's daughter" as the mother of "Karl Sonason"[200]. m SUNE Ivarsson . A Swedish official.
Sune & his wife had one child:
- (a) KARL Sunasson Jarl in Vestgötland. Snorre names "Astrid, Ogmund's daughter" as the mother of "Karl Sonason"[201]. m as her first husband, BRIGIDA Haraldsdatter, [illegitimate] daughter of HARALD "Gille" King of Norway & his [wife/mistress] (-22 Oct, bur Riseberga Abbey. Snorre records that "King Harald Gille's daughter Brigida" was first married to "the Swedish king Inge Halsteinson, and afterwards to Earl Karl Sonason, and then to the Swedish king Magnus", noting that she and King Inge Haraldson were cousins by the mother's side, and "at last [she] married Earl Birger Brose"[202]. She married secondly Magnus Henriksson of Denmark, King in Östergötland, and thirdly Jarl Birger Brosa [Folkunga%C3%A4tten] (-1202).

Projects MedLands, Chapter 2, DESCENDANTS of FINN ARNESSON
ARNE . m ---. The name of Arne´s wife is not known.
Arne & his wife had four children:
- a) THORBERG Arnesson . Snorre names "Thorberg, Fin and Arne" as the sons of Arne[26].
- b) FIN Arnesson (-1062). Snorre names "Thorberg, Fin and Arne" as the sons of Arne[27]. Of Yriar in Austratt Lendermann Norway. Morkinskinna records that “Finnr Árnason” left Norway for Denmark where “King Sveinn gave him a jarldom and a great fief”, dated to the early 1050s from the context[28]. Jarl of Halland in Denmark [1051]. m THORBERG [Bergliot] Halfdansdatter daughter of HALFDAN Sigurdsson & his wife --- ([1018/20]-). Snorre names "Bergliot, a daughter of Halfdan…son of Sigurd Syr" as the wife of "Fin Arnason"[29]. Her birth date is estimated from the marriage date of her paternal grandparents, but bearing in mind the tight chronology for the birth of her daughter Ingebjörg.
- c) ARNE Arnesson . Snorre names "Thorberg, Fin and Arne" as the sons of Arne[35].
- d) KALF Arnesson (-1050) . Snorre names Kalf as brother of Fin Arnason[36]. Morkinskinna records that “Kálfr Árnason” had been promised “a jarldom by King Knútr if he would topple King Óláfr”, but adding in a later passage that he made peace with Olav´s son Magnus when he returned to Norway[37]. Orkneyinga Saga records that “Kalf Arnason” fled Magnus King of Norway and found refuge with his niece´s husband Thorfinn Jarl of Orkney[38]. Morkinskinna records that “Kálfr Árnason” disputed with King Magnus and fled to Orkney[39]. Snorre records that Kalf was killed in battle in 1050[40].
FIN Arnesson & his wife THORBERG [Bergliot] Halfdansdatterhad two children:
- i) INGIBJÖRG Finnsdatter ([1030/35]-). Orkneyinga Saga names Earl Thorfinn´s wife as “Ingibjorg, the Earls´-Mother, daughter of Earl Finn Arnason” and niece of Kalf Arnason[30]. Snorre names "Ingebjorg, the earl-mother…a daughter of Fin Arnason" as wife of Earl Thorfin[31]. Morkinskinna records that “Thorfinn jarl [of] Orkney” was married to “Kálfr´s sister Ingibjorg Árnasdóttir” at the time Kalf Arnesson fled Norway[32]. The chronology is certainly tight for Ingibjörg to have been Kalf´s niece, if it is correct that she was already married when Kalf fled Norway, which must be dated to [1040/42] from the context in Morkinskinna. Her birth date is estimated on the basis of the estimated birth dates of her mother and her older son, both of which are restricted. Orkneyinga Saga records that “Ingibjorg the Earls´-Mother” (widow of Thorfinn) married “Malcolm King of Scots, known as Long-neck” and that “their son was Duncan, King of Scots, father of William”[33]. There must be considerable doubt about whether this can be correct. Ingibjörg's [first] husband died in [1060/65]. King Malcolm's marriage to Queen Margaret is dated to 1070, three years after her arrival at the Scottish court. Although this provides sufficient time for the king to have married Ingebjörg, and for Ingebjörg to have died, the chronology for the birth of two sons would be tight. In addition, it is unlikely that either of these sons was born after [1065], as explained in the document SCOTLAND. If the king had really married Ingibjörg during this time, and if she had given birth to two sons, the absence of any reference to her in either Scottish or English sources is all the more surprising. It is possible that King Malcolm's marriage to Ingibjörg (if it did take place) was more Danico, implying concubinage rather than regular marriage, but this does not change the chronological difficulties. The one puzzle which remains, if the Saga is not correct, is why the author would have fabricated this detail. m [firstly] ([1045/50]%29 THORFINN "the Black" Jarl of Orkney, son of SIGURD "Digri" Jarl of Orkney and Caithness & his wife --- of Scotland ([1009]-[1060/65]]). [m secondly ([1066]) as his first wife, MALCOLM III "Caennmor/Bighead" King of Scotland, son of DUNCAN I King of Scotland & his wife Sibylla of Northumbria (1031-killed in battle near Alnwick, Northumberland 13 Nov 1093, bur Tynemouth, later transferred to Dunfermline Abbey, Fife, and later still to Escorial, Madrid).]
- ii) SIGRID Finnsdatter Snorre records that "Sigrid, Fin [Arnason]'s daughter" was married to Earl Orm [34]. m ORM Eilivsson, son of EILIV & his wife Ragnhild Haakonsdatter (-[1055])

Narratives in Snorre
Harald Hardråde saga section 41: "At that time, Orm called an earl on Opplandenen. His mother was Ragnhild, daughter of Håkon Earl the mighty. Orm was a named man." He appears several times over in the saga, until it is mentioned in section 50 that he was dead.
Inges saga section 2: "There fell Munån Ogmundsson, uncle of Karl Earl. Ogmund, Munån's father was the son of the earl Orm Eilivsson and Sigrid, who was the daughter of the earl Finn Arnesson."
Inges saga section 16: "Orm's mother was Ragna, the daughter of the earl Orm Eilivsson and Sigrid, who was the daughter of the earl Finn Arnesson.
Other notes
About the old cohort set on Ænes, Hatteberg and Mel Kvinnherad Hardanger, it is written quite a lot. In the literary tour, this family is usually called Galtung also for the joint soot is older than Laurits and Johan Galtung who in 1648 and 1650 were re-affirmed their company. Morten Hansen's "Norwegian Family Books" mentions the most important thing that has been published in recent years. The first basic work is undoubtedly Henning Sollied's article "Ænes'ätten and Galtung'erne". Here he managed on the basis of seal and real estate to show that the knight and the councilor Mr. Gaute Eriksson had to belong to the old great manor in Hardanger.
In 1949 came Lars Hamre's in-depth and solid article "To soga about the clans of Sandvin and Torsnes in the 1300s and 1400s". Hammers could, on the basis of partly new source material, show that the medieval set on Torsnes in Jondal in Hardanger was a distinct family, not as one had previously thought, a branch of the old country man's nest at Ænes, Hatteberg and Mel. Sollied had assumed that Sigurd at Ænes was identical to the fairy tale in Tunsberg and Bergen, Sigurd Gautsson. Hamre could, however, show that Sigurd at Ænes called Sigurd Guttormsson, Hamre, on the other hand, agreed with Sollied that Sigurd Galte is the son of the baron hr. Gaut young Gautsson, and he also found it likely that the fairy tale Sigurd Gautsson and Sigurd Galte Gautsson are identical persons.
In the period 1322-1341, Sigurd Galte Gautsson was mentioned several times in diplomas from Hardanger. But he was never as Hamre pointed to any particular geographical location. This I think has its explanation that Sigurd Gautssona's real home was East Norway, most likely Vestfold.
We know the Ænes family? I choose to use this denomination from earlier was associated with eastern Norwegian districts, here also included later Båhuslen. Thus, when Tjølling Church in 1401 had a claim for the considerable amount of 16 mark ancient in the legacy of Sigurd Gautsson, this would indicate a strong connection to Vestfold. The same may well indicate his service as a fairy tale in Tunsberg. He has undoubtedly belonged to the group of the great men of the time who had their financial interests attached to both the city and the country, were both a businessman and a landowner. As belonging to the powerful Ænes family, Sigurd Gautsson undoubtedly also owned properties in Hardanger. It could therefore also be obvious to him to act as a fairytale in Bergen

Andre notater
