About Oche chug o Ke zhig Oke aka 'Maud Thunder'
O Che Chag O Ke Shig Oke is a Red Lake Band of Chippewa woman
The Legend of Red Lake
According to Ojibway legend, thousands of years ago two warriors of the the Chippeway nation came upon a very large moose beside a lake. They believed the beast was Matchee Manitou (evil spirit) and tried to kill it. Wounded, the animal escaped by diving deep into the lake. A large pool of blood coloured the water red, and the hunters named the body of water Misque Sakigon, or Colour of Blood Lake. Over the years it became known as Red Lake.

The tribe claims the land by right of conquest and aboriginal title; they were not reassigned to it by the United States government. The Red Lake Band of Chippewa refused to join with six other bands in organizing as the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe in the mid-1930s; at the time, its people wanted to preserve their traditional system of hereditary chiefs, rather than forming an electoral government.
The seven principal clans (doodems) found on the Red Lake Indian Reservation are makwa (bear), mikinaak (turtle), owaazisii (bullhead), nigig (otter), migizi (eagle), waabizheshi (marten), and ogiishkimanisii (kingfisher).

From the mid -1870s to the early 1920s, the quest for furs, then for minerals, brought Europeans to the area. In the summer of 1925, two brothers, Lorne and Ray Howey, discovered gold under the roots of an upturned tree. This event triggered the last great gold rush in North America, the birth of commercial bush flying in Canada, and the founding of the town of Red Lake. More than 3,000 people converged on Red Lake at the height of the Gold Rush of 1926. As of July 2014, approximately 27 million troy ounces (839 tonnes) of gold have been mined in the Red Lake area.

Biography:
O Che Chag O Ke Shig Oke, aka Maud(e) Thunder was born c. 1865 to an unknown father and Chippewa mother May dway nah kab zhe oke. (Possible parents were father Ah ne me ke we gwon (B=1849) and mother Ah be je ke zhig oke-Old Lady Rosebear (b=1859), based on mothers surname and the fact that she moves from line 28 in the 1916 census to line 1 in the 1917 census apparently after the death of her husband she became the most respected in the band)
She had two younger brothers. She also had seven (7) children between 1885 and 1902.
According to the book Vanished n Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson states that Maud was admitted on July 17, 1906 or in August 1908. On admission she was diagnosed with periodic insanity, which was revised to manic-depressive in 1910 by Dr. Harry Hummer in 1910 but she is not in Table 8 as a patient because she had been discharged in March. maud had been discharged on March 23, 1910
Her name is spelled by Canton as Oche chago oke zhig oke, spelled by Carla Joinson as Oche-chago-oke-zhig-oke, and with multiple other spelling variations through the census reports.
In the June 30, 1891 census she is indicated as living separately from her mother and brothers, with a son/daughter Nay nah e gwon abe (b=1890) age 2, so she was married in 1888/89, at this time the name of her husband is unknown although it is likely "NN Thunder". Census reports are split on whether this is a son or a daughter
Maud married John Thunder c. 1900 as the 1914 census shows a daughter b=1900 and son b=1903
Her profile is part of the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Canton_Asylum.
Research Notes:
-In the 1880's not only were these people Red Lake band of Chippewa Indians but within this band there were sub-bands under different chiefs
-It is interesting to note that the same syllables are used in different sequences to form a different name.
