About Nam-yat 'Stephen' Harrison
Stephen was a Sac and Fox Indian belonging to the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Oklahoma.
Federally recognized as the "Sac and Fox Tribe of Indians of the Mississippi River in Oklahoma," and commonly known as the Sac and Fox Nation, the Thakiwaki (Sauk/Sac) are an Algonquian indigenous to the Western Great Lakes region. Through a series of dislocations, they found themselves in the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in the 1870s. The misnomer "Sac and Fox" is a historical accident, a conflation of "Sac" (Sauk), or Thâkîwaki ("people coming forth [from the outlet]," i.e., "from the water"), and "Fox," or Meskwâki ("people of the red earth") misapplied by the U.S. government during treaty negotiations in 1804.
Although they were historically associated and closely related by language and culture, the two peoples have always remained geographically and politically distinct. The Meskwaki have resided in the Meskwaki Settlement in central Iowa since 1856, and the Thakiwaki have been in central Oklahoma since the 1870s. The contemporary Sac and Fox population in Oklahoma claims to be predominantly of Thakiwaki decent and typically refers to themselves as both "Sac and Fox" and Sauk and to their heritage language as Sauk.
Dislocated from their indigenous lands through a series of armed conflicts and treaties, the Sac and Fox resided for a time in Illinois (1764 to 1830), briefly in Iowa (1831 to 1846), and in Kansas (1847 to 1867) before being removed to the Indian Territory in the 1870s. They were originally governed by a hereditary clan system

Biography:
Stephen Harrison, aka Nam-yat, was born c. 1874 to father Ni-kol-lo-so-het 'Benjamin' Harrison and mother Kish-sha-saw 'Martha' Harrison, probably on the Sac and Fox Reservation near Stroud, Oklahoma, where he lived.

His family is descended from the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi. Stephen appears to have married although his wife Sarah Harrison (Carter) appears only once as his wife in the census reports. It appears that they were divorced in 1899 after the birth of their 2nd son Ambrose. Stephen also appears to have had a 8-year younger brother named Na-che-kaw-chick 'Rufus' Harrison.
According to the book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Jopinson states that he was admitted to the Canton Asylum on June 17, 1910, and diagnosed with dementia praecox, hebephrenic. (Dementia praecox was a term used by German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin to describe a condition that included hebephrenia, a psychotic condition that begins in adolescence. Hebephrenia is a term introduced by Ewald Hecker in 1871 to describe a disease that affects younger patients and causes psychosis that worsens over time. The term comes from the Greek goddess of youth, Hebe, and means "youthful insanity".
It appears that Stephen spent most of twenty years as a patient Inmate in the Canton Asylum, where he (probably) died on September 29, 1930. His remains were shipped back to Oklahoma where he was buried in the Henry Hunter Cemetery, Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma.
His profile is part of the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Canton_Asylum.
Research Notes:
-The names "Oklahoma tribe of Sac and Fox" "Sac and Fox of the Mississippi Indians", "Sac and Fox Indians", and other variations, were the same tribe, all being different names for the Sac and Fox of the Mississippi tribe who had been migrated to Oklahoma between 1764 and 1870 who ended up in Indian Territory.
-The June 30, 1931, Canton male census does NOT identify Steven, consistent with his death on September 29, 1930
-The June 30, 1889 census uses Indian names (MOSTLY), Benjamin's family is ONLY Indian names
-For the June 30, 1885 census the Indian Agent deferred, claiming it was too difficult with six tribes and four reservations under his jurisdiction.
