A date and place of birth has not been identified for Matthew Stewart. Darryl Lundy's Peerage suggests that he was born between 1460 and 1470. Darryl Lundy's Peerage: Matthew Stuart, 2nd Earl of Lennox This proposition fits well with the age suggested by the letter by which James IV, King of Scots, confirmed that he had given custody of Dumbarton Castle to Matthew and his father, where it would appear that Matthew may have already reached the age of majority before 22 October 1488, that is before 22 October 1467. Death

Matthew Stewart, Earl of Lennox, was killed at the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513. Thereafter, on 23 September 1513, his son John received a precept of sasine from the Scottish Chancery as heir to his deceased father. NRS: GD220/1/F/6/2/10

Matthew Stewart, 2nd Earl of Lennox (Bef. 5 May 1488-9 September 1513, Flodden) was a prominent Scottish nobleman. Stewart was the son of John Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox, and Margaret Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie.

He married firstly, on 13 June 1490, Margaret Lyle, daughter of Robert Lyle, Lord Lyle. On 9 April 1494, he married Elizabeth Hamilton, daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, and Mary Stewart, daughter of King James II of Scotland.

Stewart and Elizabeth Hamilton had six children: Mungo Stewart, Agnes Stewart, John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox, Margaret Stewart, Elizabeth Stewart, and Catherine Stewart.
