The Fulk family of Orange and Rockingham counties in Virginia has a long-standing belief that the wife of Matthew Fulk was a Native American woman. There are few records for Matthew and none for any wife.
A 1977 typescript says this about him, citing 1949 family correspondence:
"The Fulk family originated in Holland. [This is incorrect; they were German.] In 1725 two brothers, Ludwig and Matthew Fulk, immigrated to Pennsylvania. They then travelled south into Virginia and settled into what is now known as Fulks Run in Rockingham Co. Ludwig was killed by Indians in 1756, leaving no issue. Matthew, to save his life, married an Indian girl of the Senadoe tribe. In 1763, he was appointed by Governor Madison of Virginia to affect a peace treaty with the Indians. There is a monument erected in his memory near Harrisonburg, Va.(1)
"Matthew's two sons, Adam and John, we're the ancestors of a great posterity of Fulks in Virginia, Ohio and Indiana... John Fulk married a Dutch girl (Miss Beeler) and was the father of eleven children [named]..."[3]
