About Mathilda von Merseburg, Äbtissen von Herford

. --- (-before 908). The name of the husband of Mathilde is not known but, if the chronicler Widukind is to be believed, he was a descendant of Duke Widukind[43]. This appears corroborated by the transmission of the name Widukind to his grandson. If this is correct, from a chronological point of view it is likely that he was the great-grandson of Widukind. m MATHILDE, daughter of --- (-911 or after). The mother of "Thietrici comitis" is named "abbatissa Mahthild" in the Vita Mathildis Reginæ, which specifies that she was abbess at Herford[44]. According to Grote[45], she was recorded as abbess in 908 and 911 but the primary sources on which this is based have not so far been identified. Mathilde & her husband had one child:

a. Theodoric (d. 8 November 917, married Reginlind or Reinhild). Theoderic & his wife had seven children, including:

iv. MATHILDE ([896]-Quedlinburg 14 Mar 968, bur Quedlinburg Stiftskirche).

The German Wikipedia page on "Stift Herford" seems to indicate that her granddaughter was brought to be raised at her convent (the oldest in Germany) on her initiative:

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stift_Herford

In English:

During the time of Abbess Mathilde I, her granddaughter Mathilde was brought here through her intermediation, and later the girl married Heinrich I, Duke of Saxony and later King. Between 919 and 924, Herford was destroyed by the Magyars, but by 927 was rebuilt. In the memory of her late husband, the Herford-educated Mathilde established in 936 the Convent of Quedlinburg.

Herford, Germany

The town was founded in 789 by Charlemagne in order to guard a ford crossing the narrow Werre river. A century later, Matilda, daughter of Theudebert, duke of Saxony, grew up in the abbey of Herford; she was a descendant of the Saxon leader Widukind. In Herford she met Henry the Fowler, who later became king of Germany.
