About Mary Witt
Huguenot Myth
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Witt-12
The fallacy of William Witt (and his brother John) as being Huguenots and from France has now been dispelled; and, per the attached 2007 email, is no longer accepted as evidence for membership in the Huguenot Society. William's name as being Guillame and his wife as a Daux also originated from this error and should be discarded[4].
The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia published conflicting information about William's wife about 1924. She is named in one publication as Elizabeth Daux. In another she is named as "Mildred Daux (daughter of Walter Daux b1630, d1674 Charles City County)." No evidence is given to support these assertions. It is known that Walter Daux (who died in 1658, not 1674) had only two daughters, Ann and Susannah. Ann Daux was William's mother. No other Daux family is known in Charles City County at this time. [5].
Since the other claim made by this Huguenot Society, that John Witt and his sons, including William Witt, were Huguenots, has been proven false, this identification of William's wife as Elizabeth or Mildred Daux cannot be accepted as accurate. It is extremely unlikely that we will ever know the name of William Witt's wife.
Birth
No birth record has been found for William. His birth year is based on the date of his parents marriage in 1673 and the births of his children beginning about 1710. He was likely born in Charles City County, Virginia Colony, based on his parents residency.
Marriage
No marriage record has been found. No record of any kind has been found which names William's wife as Elizabeth Mildred Daux.
Since William's oldest son John was born about 1710, we can infer that William married someone about 1708/1709 in Charles City County.
In September 1741 William made a deed of gift to his son, John Witt. No wife is listed as agreeing to waive her dower rights; a custom usually, but not always, followed. No wife is named in William's will. It is generally inferred that his wife was dead by 1741.
Children
Not all of the births of William's children are included here. More will be added as they are verified. William's will names sons John and Benjamin and daughters Sarah (Witt) Cannady and Agness (Witt) Key. One bequest specifies that a slave be divided "among all my Children except my son Benjamin Witt, Sarah Canidey, and Agness Key." This implies that William had more than two additional children. The gap in birth dates between Sarah (1716) and Agness (1732) also indicates more children.
