1704. Hendrick SELLEN, born Oct 16, 1666 in Krefeld or Mulheim on Ruhr; died Aft. 1749 in PA. He married 1705. Mary.
1705. 'Mary.' Notes for Hendrick SELLEN: Hendrick Sellen came to Germantown in 1686, probably with brothers Dirck and Martin and sons Peter, Jacob and John. He was prominent in township affairs, frequently serving as inspector of roads and fences. He also collected the tax to build a more substantial jail. Hendrick was listed as property owner on a 1688 map. He owned lot number 12 on the East side of the Germantown main street in 1689, and was one of those drawing for lots on 4 Feb 1689. One of 52 adult males on the Germantown tax list of 15 May 1693, he was naturalized in Philadelphia in 1691, and renaturalized in 1709. Although Hendrick was in Krisheim Twp by 1701, his children attended the Pastorious School (between 1702 and 1718). Curiously, a story of a pint of wine and a roll between Hendrick and Daniel Pastorious has survived. (Hull, but what is the story?) Hendrick was attorney or agent for Jan Strypers and Dirck Sipman, original purchasers of Germantown land and in 1698 returned to Krefeld on business. John Ruth speculates that "perhaps Hendrick Sellen's trip bore some relation to the matter" of consulting with European church leaders on how to ordain American clergy and bishops. Hendrick was on the 1708 membership of the Germantown Mennonite church. He accepted an indenture for the Skippack church in 1714 and was a trustee in 1717. In 1714 he owned 291 1/2 acres, probably at Krisheim Twp, where he built an oil mill. In 1734 a Hendrick Zell owned land and paid quit rents on 100 acres in Krisheim Twp. According to the Celle-etc newsletter, "Before 16 April 1739 Heinrich Sellen had sold his oil mill and moved to Komupanga....Komupanga Creek runs from Wernersville, Berks County, through Lancaster County, to the Susquehanna River at the York County line." Later Sells lived in York County.
