About Mary Mason - Metcalfe, Convict “Lord Auckland” 1848
BIRTH & BAPTISM 1828 in Waterford based on her spoken dialect/accent (see below, Mary spoke only Irish in a Waterford dialect), but no record.
HOWEVER, her records show her as born Dun Laoghaire (Kings Town, co Dublin) so I think that must stand despite the record which said she spoke only Waterford Irish. Perhaps her parents were from Waterford and moved to Dublin.
First name(s) M Ann Father's first name(s) William Last name Moran Father's last name Moran Birth year - Mother's first name(s) Margret Baptism year 1828 Mother's last name Moran Baptism date 05 Oct 1828 Repository National Library of Ireland Residence Glenagary Parish Kingstown Register Baptism Alternative parish names Dun Laoghaire, St. Michael's, Kingstown Diocese Dublin County Dublin Country Ireland [This is the best match for the available evidence]
Possibly? 1829 Kingstown, Co Dublin [The person who suggests this also suggests her parents were William Benjamin Jones & Mary Jones so I don't have a lot of confidence in the attribution]
Mary Moran of 7 Little Baron Strand Waterford was a tin-plate worker. (a relative?) Mary Moran 64yrs was buried at Lismore, Dungarvan parish, co Waterford Dec 2 1845. (possibly her mother?)
1842: Mary Moran, 15yrs, factory girl, admitted to the workhouse in North Dublin. She was clean and healthy. Could this be young Mary after leaving Waterford?
CRIMINAL CONVICTION Dublin Evening Packet 8 August 1848 COUNTY CALENDER (of trials) .....Mary Moran, 20, burglary ......... [other papers say simply that she was charged with a felony]
Mary was a 20 yr old house maid in 1848. She was tried in Dublin County Court August 8th, for burglary and sentenced to 5 yrs transportation. Her native language was Irish, the Waterford dialect of Munster. Still speaks Gaelic at a high level. She arrived in "Lord Aukland". Prison register reports she had frequently been charged before, sentenced to 7 yrs transportation, single, Roman Catholic, no occupation or trade, transported 5 Oct 1848 in "Lord Aukland". At Grangegorman womens prison, Co Dublin. She was 5'2", grey eyes, brown hair, fair skin, single, illiterate, no trade, often previously convicted, 'disposed of' 5th Oct 1848 to "Lord Aukland".
There were several Mary Morans in Dublin gaols in 1848- and there is more than one gaol. This one is easily confused with our Mary because so many of her details are similar, however, a lass born Dublin would have spoken English, not Irish in a Waterford dialect. She was transported at about the same time, and had several priors. All her prison records show her as born Dublin county. Mary Moran, 20yrs, sentenced to 7 yrs. transportation for Burglary & Robbery 1st Aug 1848, single, illiterate, 5'2", grey eyes, black hair, fresh complexion, no trade, born Stradbroke, co Dublin. Mary Moran b.co Galway, 23yrs, country servant, was transported the same year.
