About Mary Kingsley
Mary Johnson Mowry Kingsley, daughter of Capt John Johnson and Mary Heath
Source: Gerald Garth Johnson The Biography and Genealogy of Captain John Johnson, Heritage Books, 2008, page 102.
Baptized July 31, 1614, Ware, Hertfordshire, England. Died January 29, 1678/9. First married Roger Mowry. He died Providence, RI January 5, 1666. She married second John Kingsley, March 16, 1673/74.
Came from England with father c1630.
Died 29 January 1678/9.
Rhode Island Genealogical Register ( p. 346 ) lists the following reference to Mary :
"10/12/1659 : Roger Mowry, of Providence, and his wife, 'being the eldest daughter of John Johnson, late of Roxbury, in Suffolk, in the Massachusetts Colony of New England, deceased,' for the sum of £60 deeded to William Parkes, of Roxbury, that 1/6th part of the estate of said Johnson, devised to them by his will, dated 9/30/1659.
Mary was apparently related to the Heath family of Roxbury as she was the recipient of grants from several Heath wills :
1/21/1661 - Isaac Heath of Roxbury died at this date and in his will gives 20 shillings to his kinswoman Mary Mowry.
1/1/1664 - Elizabeth Heath, of Roxbury, widow of Isaac, left a legacy of 10 shillings to Mary Mowry and the same sum to Mary's son, Thomas Mowry.
She was named as executrix of Roger's estate but declined as the estate would "not discharge just debts and pay legacies." The Town Council gave her £20 of the estate at her request to help relieve her old age and for good reasons to them appearing. This action of the Council was approved by the Assembly at the above given date, and the Council was further given full power to settle the estate.
9/5/1671 - Mary sold her dwelling house, outhousing and 3 house lots and commoning to Stephen Paine of Rehoboth.
It is possible that Mary Johnson is related to the Heaths of Roxbury as she was provided for in the wills of both Isaac Heath ( in his will dated 1/21/1661, he left 20 shillings to his kinswoman, Mary Johnson ) and his widow, Elizabeth, left Mary and her son 10 shillings each ( in her will dated 1/1/1664) - notes from Tree #4031 Broderbund WFT Vol.2, Ed. 1.
