About Mary Bennett

Biography

http://www.unc.edu/~rowlett/families/rogers.htm (dead link)

"Mary Rogers, one of four known daughters of William and Elizabeth Rogers, was probably born in the mid 1690s. Around 1715 she married James Bennett. They had at least eight children. Her date of death is not known."

Mary was born in 1694. She was the daughter of William Rogers and Elizabeth Cartwright. [1]

Mary Rogers married James Bennett, son of Richard Bennett, Jr., eldest son of Richard, Sr. and his wife Ann, originally of Wight County Virginia. James inherited property in Wight County, and purchased property in both Wight and Brunswick County, Virginia. They eventually moved the whole family to Brunswick County, where they lived and both died.

Mary Rogers is probably not the first wife of James, as she is too young to be mother to his eldest two sons. Also, James is twelve years her senior. Mary is listed as Mary "Bennit" in her father's will in 1727, Surrey County, Virginia, so that helps establish the date of their marriage as before 1727.

Mary survived her husband and inherited when he died. His Will was probated March 1, 1752. [2]

Children of James that were mentioned in his Will are:

  1. Benjamin Bennett, born 1704, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, died circa 1783, in Effingham, Georgia, married Sarah Sadler
  2. Reuben Bennett, born 1707, in Isle of Wight County, Virgninia, died circa 1793, in Warren County, North Carolina
  3. James Bennett
  4. Mary (Bennett) Proctor
  5. Frances (Bennett) Simms
  6. Priscilla Bennett, born and died in Brunswick, married John Dugger and had 13 children
  7. Joseph Bennett
  8. Brambley Bennett (daughter)

Researcher's Notes

The Find A Grave Memorial for Mary (Rogers) Bennett gives Mary's year of death as 1751, however it would seem that she lived until after the Will was probated March 1, 1752, or the Will would have been amended.

There are also notes on both Mary's memorial and on James's memorial, giving the year of Priscilla's birth as 1724 and death in 1777, while Priscilla's memorial gives the years as 1720 - 1790 https://findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=104143745
