Notes
Mary Mottram’s second Marriage of Mary MOTTRAM Ball to William LOWRY before June 15, 1725 Deed from William Lowry and Mary, his wife, deed to Richard BALL of Lancaster for 400 acres, part of a patent for 122 acres granted to Colonel John MOTTRAM 19 October 1653 and known by the name of "Black Point", situated in Northumberland county and to be laid off next and adjoining the land belonging to colonel Peter HACK for the use and behalf of Joseph BALL and William BALL, sons of the said Mary Lowry, late widow and relict of Joseph BALL, deceased.
Birth of Mary MOTTRAM: 15 April 1705 Northumberland, Virginia Guardianship petition of Mary MOTTRAM.
Under Virginia Colonial law, once a minor child reached age 14, he or she could petition the court to choose his or her own Guardian, in 1705, Mary MOTTRAM had to be a t least Age 14, thereby being born 1691 or earlier. Mary petitioned the court to appoint, Richard BALL, her "step father". there is a note attached to this citation that Richard was the brother to her "later husband, Joseph BALL."] As of march, 2017, I do not find attribution for this note.
In the 1724 Will of William LOWRY, Sr, his son William LOWRY is named. Two daughters-in-law are named as Mrs. Jane Lowry and Mrs. Mary Lowry in this will. As several other sources document that Mrs. Jane Lowry was the former Jane NUTTING who married John LOWRY, Sr, it therefore follows that Mrs. Mary Lowry was the wife of William LOWRY. Further, the 1724 Will bequeathed land in Essex and in King and Queen Counties to William LOWRY whereas John LOWRY stayed in Elizabeth City County where he served, both as a justice and as a surveyor.
