About Martin I de Vitré, Seigneur de Vitré

  • "The history of the Vitré family can be reconstructed with a certain degree of confidence from numerous charters which are quoted below.
  • "The early 17th century Chroniques de Vitré of Pierre Le Baud introduce some additional elements[810]. While these have been referenced below, Le Baud’s reliability is difficult to assess. He mentions sources in support of some of his information but provides no citation references, while in some cases the data is clearly disproved by the charters.
  • "According to Le Baud, Rivallon was the son of “Martin de Rennes...d’une noble dame que l’histoire ne nomme point”[811]. He connects Martin with the Breton ducal family but cites no source supporting his statements. The name Martin is found only once among Rivallon’s known descendants.
  • "Le Baud’s information should presumably be treated with caution."

French sources write his name Martin de Rennes being a "seigneur de Vitré". What follows is one such source with other excerpts posted in Sources.

EN: If Martin of Rennes, Lord of Vitré, and Rivalon his son died, when he came to know him served Geffroy so well and loyally & was agreeable to him, that he did not only conform to him what Count Juhael his ancestor had given to Martin his father, but strove for his power to amplify and increase him, for he gave him to wife a Noble Lady also of his lineage, who was called Genergande the Vicar, with all the right that belonged to her: it is to knowing the land and Lordship of AUROY, whose Chapel is said to have been built by Roy Artus, in all his Customs; the port of VENNES, where the small Customs of the City;…

EN: And so for this Customs of Rennes and other duties which will belong in the City to Rivalon by the right of his wife; which RIGHTS and CUSTOMS called VICAIRERIES and also for the GUARD OF DU CHASTEAU DE RENNES, and other Privileges, was the said Rivalon called VICAIRE DE RENNES, which name was continued after several years to his successors, and since called Viscounts who is the same.
