Margaret Stewart of Methven

Daughter of Henry Stewart, 1st Lord of Methven & Janet Stewart, Countess Dowager of Sutherland: Margaret's date of birth is a circa 1547 which is hard to fathom with her giving birth to Andrew first Baron CastleStewart in the year 1560. It is more likely that with the birth of Margaret originally being to her father's mistress, the birth year of Margaret was several years earlier. That would then match up with the 1560 birth year of son Andrew.

Andrew Stewart, Master of Ochiltree, and his wife Margaret Stewart of Methven, did have a daughter who married a Gilbert Kennedy. But he was of a different Kennedy family, not the one shown in Tim Dowling's pedigree, and his line died out with his Thomas who died sp.

The account of Stewart of Ochiltree in vol. 6 of SP gives the following seven daughters:

m (before 4 Feb 1500) MARGARET Kennedy, daughter of JOHN 2nd Lord Kennedy & his second wife Elizabeth Seton of the Earls of Huntly (-1542 before 28 May).

Andrew & his wife had eight children:

2. HENRY Stewart ([1495/1500]-soon after 10 Oct 1551). He was created Lord Methven 17 Jul 1528. Lord Chancellor and Lord High Treasurer of Scotland.

m secondly (1528) as her third husband, MARGARET Tudor, widow firstly of JAMES IV King of Scotland and divorced wife secondly of ARCHIBALD Douglas 6th Earl of Angus, daughter of HENRY VII King of England & his wife Elizabeth of York (Palace of Westminster 28 Nov 1489-Methven Castle, Perthshire 18 Oct 1541, bur Carthusian Monastery of St John, Perth).

m thirdly (before 5 Nov 1544) as her third husband, JANET Stewart, widow firstly of ALEXANDER Gordon Master of Sutherland, and divorced wife secondly of Sir HUGH Kennedy of Girvanmaily, daughter of JOHN Stewart 2nd Earl of Atholl & his wife Janet Campbell of Argyll. She married fourthly (contract 9 Apr 1557) Patrick Ruthven Lord Ruthven, and fifthly James Gray of Foulis. Henry & his first wife had one child:

a) JOHN (-killed in battle at Pinkie 1547). Master of Methven.

c) JOAN (-before 1571). m (contract 14 Oct 1551) as his first wife, COLIN Campbell, son of ARCHIBALD Campbell Earl of Argyll & his second wife Margaret Graham of the Earls of Menteith (Darnaway 10 Sep 1584). He succeeded his half-brother in 1573 as Earl of Argyll.

d) DOROTHEA (-after Aug 1605). m (Perth 17 Aug 1561) WILLIAM Ruthven Lord Ruthven, son of PATRICK Ruthven Lord Ruthven & his first wife Janet Douglas (-executed Stirling 4 May 1584). He was created Earl of Gowrie in 1581.

She married secondly ([Oct 1573]) as his second wife, Andrew Leslie 5th Earl of Rothes. Henry & his wife had two children:
