Disputed origins

She is widely attributed as being Margaret Taft, daughter of Nicholas Taft and his wife, Margaret (Milner) Taft, who was married at St. Dunstans, Stepney, London, England on May 24, 1643 to John Jackson. This identification, however, has not been proven and is disputed.

Margaret Taft, daughter of Nicholas and Margaret Taft, was born 18 Mar 1618 and her baptism on 25 Mar 1617 recorded at Saint Dunstan's Church, in Stepney, London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Source: "England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975" Margarett Taft Born 18 Mar 1617; Baptism Date 25 Mar 1617 Baptism Place Saint Dunstan, Stepney, London,England Father Nicholas Taft Mother Margarett FHL Film Number 595417.

The gravestone of Margaret, wife of John Jackson, who settled in Newton, indicates she was born circa 1624, clearly contrasting with the date of birth for Margaret Taft (18 Mar 1618).

Margaret Taft was married at London on 24 May 1643 to John Jackson. Source: London, England, Extracted Church of England Parish Records, 24 May 1643, Jackson, John & Taft, Margt, Book 24 Collection London: - Calendar of Marriage Licence Allegations, 1597-1648. It has not been proven, however, that this same-named couple is identical with the couple who settled in the village of Newton in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
