About Major George Pipe, Sr.

 George Pipe was a brick mason in England by profession when he and his family set sail to their new home in America. They arrived in the port of New Orleans, Louisiana, on April 10 1845, as passengers on the ship Washington, which had departed from London England. With his wife Charolette and their daughter Charolette.Traveling up the Mississippi river to their new home in St. Louis. By 1860 he was operating as a successful contractor and builder in the city.  

George Pipe fought for the Union Army in the American Civil War. Entering the service on September 4 1861 in the 66th Illinois infantry regiment, Units B, F and S, at 1st Lieutenant; as a Field Officer. He first joined with the 14th Missouri Volunteers but the unit would be reformed in Illinois where George and his fellow staff members were reassigned. Known as the "Western Sharpshooters" they were a specialized regiment of infantry sharpshooters designed to complement similar regiments in the Eastern Theatre.
17 years and three days after his arrival in the United States. George having been 1st Lieutenant was promoted on April 13th 1862, to the rank of Major. George was also charged to build up a Militia of non-English speaking citizens for the city of St. Louis by the city government.
