About Major Frederick Hummel
Town founder of Fredericksburg (now Hummelstown). Frederick Hummel came to America in 1738. In 1762 he purchased a large tract of land for 200 pounds. A portion of this land was laid out as a village which he named Frederickstown, but was changed to Hummelstown after his death. In the plot he donated land for the erection of the Lutheran and Reformed German churches and the first school with the condition that English branches also be taught there, despite its unpopularity in the predominantly German community. This duality is reflected in his headstone - carved in German on the front and English on the back. Reference: Find A Grave Memorial
