  • Eldest son of Daniel Markham of Kinsale, Ireland.
  • Educated at Trinity College, Dublin by Dr. Andrews. Dr. Andrews an old Westminster man, brought to Ireland by the Duke of Ormond.
  • 1705: Markham, William, 14 years 12-05-1705. (Son of Daniel, ludimagister). NOTE: This is a transcript/book error. It should read 19 years (1705-19=1686).[1][1]
  • 1706: MARKHAM, WILLIAM, Siz. (Mr Andrews, Kilkenny), Dec. 23, 1706, aged 19; s. of Daniel, Ludimagister; b. near Limerick.[2][2]
  • He kept a school at Kinsale and was a classical scholar.
  • Served under General Stanhope in Spain.
  • Built first house at Halifax, Nova Scotia.
  • Shipwrecked on an island between Halifax and the Isle of Sables and lost all the family papers.
  • He was granted 5000 acres in Tryon County, New York for his service as a field officer in the 47th Regiment of Foot. The land was never attained by the family.
  • Aft. 1732? or so, he left Kinsale after the death of his wife, and took his son William, future Archbishop of York, to be educated in London.
  • br:1771-06-01: In North Cloister, Westminster Abbey, London. He died 'in his 86th year'. The Funeral Book calls him 'Major William Markham' and says that he died 27 May (1771), He was the eldest son of Daniel Markham, of Kinsale, Ireland.[3]

The Funeral Book calls him "Major William Markham," and says that he died 27 May. He was the eldest son of Daniel Markham, of Kinsale, Ireland, Esq. (descended from the ancient family of his name at Cotham, co. Notts), formerly a Colonel in the army, by Elizabeth, clau. of Captain William Fennell. of Cappagh, co. Kilkenny, whose wife is said to have been a dau. of Bridget Fleetwood, daughter of Oliver Cromwell. He was bom at Kilkenny in 1686, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He entered the army in 1710, and went to Halifax, Nova Scotia, as major of his regiment, in 1749, where he remained several years, and is said to have erected the first house in that place. He married, in 1717, his distant kinswoman, Elizabeth, dau. of George Markham, of Worksop Lodge, co. Notts, who died 17 July 1732, leaving issue three sons and one daughter. See the burials of his sons, 2 Jan. and 6 Feb. 1801, and 11 Nov. 1807.
