About Luke Perkins, of Plympton

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Perkins-1649

Luke Perkins, born 18 March 1667/8 in Charlestown, Massachusetts, was the son of Luke Perkins[1][2] and Hannah Long.[3] He was baptized at the First Church in Charlestown on 19 June 1669/70.[4]

On 31 May 1688, Luke married Martha Conant,[5][6] daughter of Lot and Elizabeth Conant.[7] Their marriage was recorded in both Salem and Topsfield, Massachusetts.[3]

Luke and Martha had the following children:

  1. John, born 5 April 1689[6] at Marblehead, Massachusetts, died 1728 at Plympton, married Mary/Mercy Jackson[3]
  2. Martha, born 19 September 1691 at Beverly,[6] died young[3]
  3. Hannah, born 12 March 1693,[3] baptized 8 May 1693 at Beverly[6]
  4. Luke, born 17 September 1695,[6] married Ruth Cushman[3]
  5. Mark, baptized in Beverly 30 April 1699; married Dorothy Whipple[3][6]
  6. Josiah, baptized 11 November 160[1] at Beverly,[6] married Deborah Bennett and had 13 children[8]
  7. Martha, born 14 August 1707 in Beverly;[6] married first to Elisha Washburn, married second to Jonathan Tilson and had children with both husbands[9]

It is said that Luke resided for a time in the Massachusetts towns of Marblehead, Beverly, Wenham and Ipswich, where he worked as a blacksmith. On 24 November 1704, Luke and Martha Perkins "formerly of Beverly now of Ipswich" sold a house and land in Beverly that had formerly belonged to Martha's father, Lot Conant. In November 1714, the family removed to Plympton, Massachusetts, where they were given a lot of 18 acres of land at Rocky Run. Some believe he was given the land as an inducement to settle in Plympton and work there as a blacksmith.[3]

Luke was appointed the administrator of his father's estate on 20 February 1712/3 and filed an inventory on 23 March 1713.[10] He was later named the administrator of the estate of his mother, who died 16 November 1715. In his capacity as administrator of these estates, he sold the family homestead in Charlestown in 1715.[3]

Luke died in Plympton on 27 December 1748, aged 82 years,[3][11] and is buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Plympton, Massachusetts.[12] His wife died 2 January 1754 in Plympton.[3][11]
