About Lord Waldeve, Earl of Dunbar
Waldeve, son of Earl Gospatric and Countess Derdere, succeeded as fourth Earl of Dunbar or Lothian, though he himself uses neither title, calling himself Waldeve the Earl. It is probably he who, as son of Gospatric the Earl, is named first as one of five hostages given to King Stephen, after the battle of the Standard, in 1138. After his succession he confirmed the grants made by his predecessors, the first charter granted by him as Earl being sealed in 1166, to the monks of Durham, Kelso and Melrose, and the nuns of Coldstream. He was frequently with King William the Lion in his progresses through the kingdom, but seems generally to have kept aloof from political matters, except in one case, where he strove, but without success, to dissuade King William from going to war with England to enforce his claim to the earldom of Northumberland, and he was one of those who, in 1175, became sureties for that King that he would observe the treaty of Falaise. He died in 1182. His wife was named Aelina, or Aline, but nothing is known of her, except a reference to her in the Earl's 'charters, and the date of her death, 20 August 1179.
They had issue:
1. Patrick, who succeeded as Earl.
2. Constantine, who is named in his father's charter of 1166 before cited, but who seems to have died young.
3. A daughter, Alice or Helen, is said to have married Philip Seton, but no satisfactory evidence is given.

Waldeuus comes, 4th Earl : An Overview
We know of Waldeuus comes, 4th Earl, from the book "Records of the Heath Family", 1913 by George Heath. The entry reads as follows:
"Waltheuus" or "Waldeuus comes," fourth Earl, Waltheof or Waldeve in English, Gaullève in French, is represented on his seal wearing a conical helmet with nasal; his shield is suspended from his neck, his horse canters to sinister. The "Chronica de Mailros" records his death- "Anno mo. co. lxxxijo. ***** Obiit Waldeuus comes de dunbar cui successit Patricius filius ejus." He was born about 1131.
He was a donor to the monks of Kelso, Durham, and Coldingham.
He gave the first charter to the family of Dundas, as follows, "Waldevius filius Gospatricii, omnibus probis hominibus salutem, Sciatis me dedisse Helie filio Uchredi, Dundass, proservitio dimidii militia, &c." The Dundasses bear the lion of Dunbar in their arms, and are probably descended from this family.
He married about 1160. His countess's name was Alina, and he left two sons: (1) Patrick, his heir; (2) Constantine, mentioned with his brother in a donation to the monastery at Coldingham. Two original charters of his are at Durham, Nos. 787 (dated 1166) and 788.

Waltheof, Earl of Dunbar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Waltheof (d. 1182), Earl of Lothian or "Dunbar" and lord of Beanley, was a 12th century Anglo-Scottish noble. He was the eldest son of Gospatric III, Earl of Lothian by his Scottish wife Deirdre.
Waltheof's grandfather Gospatric II died at the Battle of the Standard in 1138, and Waltheof's father Gospatric III became earl. Richard of Hexham reported that in 1139 the son of Earl Gospatric served as a hostage to King Stephen of England after the following peace agreement. It is generally believed, although there can be no proof, that this son was the young Waltheof. Exactly how long Waltheof would have stayed as a hostage is not known, but Waltheof's father Gospatric died in 1166 and Waltheof was apparently earl already in 1165. This was probably because Gospatric had retired to Durham as a monk some time before his actual death.
Waltheof's activities as earl included trying to persuade King William of Scotland not to invade England, which William did anyway in 1174; and arbitrating a dispute between the Abbot of Melrose and Richard de Morville. Waltheof married a woman named Alina, possibly Scottish, and by her fathered three children, Patrick (his successor), Causantín (Constantine) and Helen. He died in 1182, and is styled "Earl of Dunbar" by the Chronicle of Melrose. He was the first man to be called "earl of Dunbar" rather than "earl of Lothian".
