About Logie Nelson
The Pima Maze
Logie was a Pima (aka Akimel O'odham) man. Logie was part of the Pima community which became part of the Gila River Indian Community, he lived in the Blackwater District
The Akimel O'odham, also known as the "River People," are a Native American tribe historically inhabiting the areas along the Gila, Salt, Yaqui, and Sonora rivers in present-day Arizona, and are descendants of the ancient Hohokom people. the word Pima is a corruption of the Tohono O'odham word "pimahaitu", which basically translates to "I don't know"
Using the Santa Cruz River and the yearly downpours from the monsoons, the Akimel (River) O’odham carved out elaborate acequias, or canals, and basins to water crops. They are descendants of the ancient Hohokom people. The Tohono (Desert) O’odham that lived farther (south) from the rivers would migrate between two village locations in order to follow water sources.
The Hohokam culture is known for their extensive irrigation systems, which allowed them to farm in the desert by utilizing canals to water crops like corn, beans, and squash, a practice that continues today; their name translates to "River People" in their O'odham language, reflecting their reliance on the rivers for sustenance; Spanish explorers first encountered them in the 1600s and called them "Pima Indians.".

The Akimel O'odham had a matrilineal system, where lineage was traced through the mother's line.
...the various bands of O’odham people are broken up into four federally recognized tribes: The Tohono O’odham Nation, the Gila River Indian Community (Pima), the Ak-Chin Indian Community and the Salt River (Pima Maricopa) Indian Community. They have a shared heritage but each band is now recognized as politically and geographically distinct and separate.

Biography:
Logie Nelson was born c. 1909 to parents Joseph Nelson and Josie Lewis. His father Joseph was a Pima scout during the Apache campaign in 1896. Logia was one of eight (8) siblings.
According to the book Vanished in Hiawatha, author Carla Joinson states that Logie was admitted to the Canton Asylum on June 25, 1927, diagnosed with constitutional inferiority (a term used by psychiatrists to describe people who were considered unfit or partially fit for society, part of a person's basic nature present from birth, and frequently referred to a person with an arrested part of brain development that prevented them from assimilating to social norms).
He escaped October 26, 1927 with fellow inmate Charles Hawk, and was captured 6 days later in Sioux City, Iowa, November 1, 1927.
Logie was discharged from the Canton Asylum on July 21, 1929, for reasons unstated.
In 1935, on July 12, he married Lucy Lyons, a woman 22 years his senior. It appears that they had three children although the census reports do not identify the father, the children have the surname Lines which is probably a misspelling of the name Lyons. They took their mothers name!
His profile is part of the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Canton_Asylum.
Research Notes:
-1938 and 1939 were a supplemental census, no activity for Logie
