SEE Today -- Dal Josafat, Paarl

The name is of biblical origin, also spelled: "Dal Josafat or Dal Josaphat".

Dal Josafat has an interesting and varied selection of Buildings dating from the 18th Century. This beautiful Area along the road from Paarl to Wellington was settled for the most part by Huguenots. The original Farm of Dal Josafat, now named: "Roggeland", is the oldest in the Area. The farmlands were granted to Peter Buck of Lübeck in 1692, but it was Andries Bernardus du Toit who, in 1780, built the recently restored H-shaped gabled Houses.

Died at age 30.

"Landbouer in 't Land van Wavern"

With the death of his father in 1694, Lodewyk was only four years old. He would thus not have remembered much of the house in Strand Street where he was born, because shortly thereafter his mother married again this time to the new Landdrost of Stellenbosch, Johannes Starrenberg. Here in the Franschoek valley he grew up and it is likely that he had as many French as Dutch playmates because on the 13th December 1711 he, at age 23, married Maria Rousseau, the eldest daughter of Pierre Rousseau and Anne Retief, a French Huguenot family from the farm L'Arcs'Orleans. The couple were respected in their community, Pierre was one of the first deacons of the congregation Drakenstein and also a member of the Heemraad. Lodewyk and Maria's two daughters also married Huguenot children namely the brothers Theron of the farm "Languedoc". Furthermore, after Lodewyk's death, Maria married Charl Marais, born in Plessis Marle, near Paris in France and the eldest son of Charles Marais and Anna de Ruelle.

It is necessary to look at the background and vicinity in which this youngest son of the progenitor grew up because the characteristics laid down in these forming years as well as in his only son, Johannes Lodewyk, come prominently to the fore in his ancestors which comprise about one third of the Pretorius family in South Africa. As opposed to the descendants of his elder brother Johannes (b3) which comprises the other two thirds, Lodewyk's descendants show the distinctive attributes of their Huguenot heritage: a somewhat stubborn tendency towards conservatism in both attitude towards life and religion which is why the majority of these descendants became members of the Gereformeerde Kerk. As opposed to the descendants of his elder brother in which adventure seekers came to the fore, Lodewyk's descendants had a firm basis in the background, the academism of Lodewyk against the militarism in Johannes.

Two properties are listed in his name in the above document: "een plaats gelegen in de Daly Josafat . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 400 guilders. Although the farm in the Dal was not named it turned out to be Rust en Werk which he had purchased from Steven Bruere (appears as Brie1 in the transfer deed) in 1715 by transfer 1026 I8.2.1715. The history of this farm after his death makes interesting reading. His widow, Maria Rossouw, acquired the property from his intestate estate. Her second marriage in community of property c. 1721 (no record of this but the first child was in 1722) to Charles Marais (1695-1768) made him virtual owner of the farm and in his care it remained until his death in 1768. It was then sold from his deceased estate and that of his wife to Adolf Jonker Jr. by T. 4195 / 26.3.1768. Theassets of both Rust en Werk and Rustenburg were combined in the inventory and show that Lodewyk farmed with 100 cattle and 250 sheep, possibly on the loan place while Rust en Werk had vineyards and wine making equipment together with: 4 leggers vuijle wyn. The total estate amounted to 7102 guilders. After payment of his many debts a balance of 3775 guilders remainded for distribution among his heirs, namely his wife, two small daughters and his son. The loan place, Rustenburg has not been identified. No farm of this name is recorded in Lodewyks name in the loan farm records. To add to the confusion that exists on his landed property yet another nebulous farm, allegedly belonging to him has come to light in the estate papers of Johannes Stephanus Marais. In 1774 Marais died in possession of a piece of landed property described in inventory-MOOC 8115 No. 7, 1.9.1774 as: een stuk lands gelegen in t Land van Waveren zynde door den voorgen. Edele Heer Gouveneurvan der Stel (Willem Adriaan) aan wylen den landbouwer Louw Pretorius by een simpel briefie in eigendom vergunt geworden en indiervogen by verkoop thans aan den overledenen in bezit geraakt van den mede landbouwer Johannes Lodewyk Pretorius dogvoor als nog niet wettig getransporteert.
