Lewis Markham, Jr.

Lewis1 Markham (#256) was born in Glamorgan, Wales maybe around 1636.(1)

He married Jane (Markham). (Jane (Markham) is #6336.) Jane was born maybe around 1640. (Additional notes for Jane (Markham)(2))

22 Dec 1658 Lewis Markham of St. Fagans, Glamorgan, was bound to William Hayman to serve 4 years in Barbados.(3)

Sometime after 1660 he made his way to Virginia, by means yet undiscovered. He settled in Westmoreland County, where became involved in contracting bonded servants from his home area of Wales and Bristol to come to Virginia. Evidently he worked as a middleman, as no grant of land has been discovered in his name in return for the transport of these people.

1 Nov 1676 four men and a woman were recorded as being apprenticed in Bristol to go to Virginia in the service of Lewis Markham. Their surnames are common in Wales; no indication of their origins was given.(4)

On 15 Nov and 30 Nov 1676 two more four year apprentices to Lewis Markham were recorded, to travel in the same ship.(5)

16 Sept 1685 another list of those apprenticed in Bristol to serve Lewis Markham in Virginia for terms of four or six years was more informative. The three men and three women were all from Welsh towns, two explicitly from Glamorgan, and one even from Lewis Markham's village of origin, St. Fagan. Lewis must have spoken eloquently to his former neighbors of opportunity in the New World.
