Born in Yorkshire England and a descendant of the Dukes of York. Came from England in 1731 to Fredericksburg, Spotslvania Co., Virginia. She had many children and is known to have 4 boys who all became ministers.

Married Guillaume de Tonnelier the 2nd. who changed his name to William Tunnell Jr.

She died and is buried on her sons farm with her grandson.

Anne's grandfather was John Howard, Burgess of York. She was known as Lady Anne Howard.

Early spellings of this surname are seen as "Heyward" "Haywerd" and "Hayward"...

Legend or family story: "Lady Ann Howard's father hired William (Tunnell) to tutor his daughter, Lady Ann in French Language. (As that was very proper for ladies to know another language and the French language were considered a most pleasant and romantic language). Lady Ann and William fell in love, but. her father would not permit their marriage. They ran away and got married and her father disinherited her." (romantic but probably not able to be proven - or disproven)!

They emigrated frtom England about 1736 to Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., VA. They later moved to Fairfax Co., VA and lived not far from the Falls of the Potomac. They had many children, including 4 boys who all became ministers.

Another Old Family Story: "Lady Ann was said to have lived until 104 years of age. I read were Lady Ann was seen riding a horse near the Potomac at the young age of 99. The family legend is that Lady Ann rode her horse across the Clinch River in TN on her 100th birthday. This is based on the theory that the William Tunnell family was moving at that time. If she died in 1814 as everyone pretty much agrees, and if she was 104 when she died. She would have been 100 in 1810, which was about 22 years after she left VA. I lived in Fairfax County for 12 years. Below the falls is a pretty wide river to ride a horse across. Lady Ann is said to have been a descendant of the Dukes of York. She was the daughter of Henry Howard and Elizabeth Moss of Yorkshire, England, where Howard Castle stands today and is still in the Howard Family. Lady was her title, not her name, and she was always called Lady Ann, even in America. She lived to be 104 and is said to have been seen riding bareback across the Potomac when she was 100. Lady Ann Howard is verified as the wife of William Tunnell and the mother of William II, John, Robert and Stephen in the LDS VA surnames microfiche.

She died and in burried on her son's farm, with her grandson.

Cemetery notes and/or description: The Tunnell Family Cemetery 1154 Oliver Springs Highway Clinton, TN. 37716-5330

Located on Hwy. #61 (Oak Ridge By-Pass) 5/10 Mile west of Marlow Vol. Fire Depart.

The cemetery is behind the barn on the old Tunnell place. There is a nice sign marking the location of the old Tunnell home. The sign reads "Tunnell Springs Farm." The cemetery is located behind the barn in the woods.

There are about 6 marked graves with tombstones. There are several unmarked graves (at least 7). The oldest grave that was marked was that of Col. William C. Tunnell (1774). The most "senior" known burial is that of "Lady" Anne Howard-Tunnell who was born in 1710.
