Report from Paul Parker

The funny part about John Walker I marrying Katherine Rutherford was her family lived in England. How did they meet or decide to wed?

Her grandfather was Capt. James Rutherford who was a Scot serving in the Netherlands.

I had a great idea so I sent to Holland to find their military records. Returned to me was the information that only one records was known from that very early date. It was the marriages of Scots serving in Holland!

They had a record showing a Jheemes Rutherford marrying Maragreta Gledstein. (I have hard copies but am in the midst of remodeling my records and will look for them when I get back from Las vegas next week) I have hunted for years for a Dutch family named Gledstein but no luck. I even had the guru of Prodigy look. No such name. I went looking for the Borders people and there I found that the Rutherfords intermarried very frenquently with the Gledstaines (Gladstones). Did I feel DUMB.

These Rutherfords descend from Robert of Chatto who was given his land grant by a near kinsman, Sir Archibald Douglas. This family descends from both Robert's I and II. Sir Richard Rutherford married Jane Douglas, daughter of Sir Archibald. The Peerage of Scotland calls Robert the son of Sir Richard.

"John Walker of Wigton, Scotland" published in 1902 by Emma S. White.

  • John Walker (2), born in Wigton, Scotland,
  • married Katherine Rutherford January 07,1702,in Scotland.
  • From Scotland he moved his family and settled near the town of Newry, Ireland.
  • He and family with three of his brother, Alexander's, children left Strangford Bay in May 1726
    • (another record says 28 or 30 on board a vessel commanded by Richard Walker, and landed in Maryland August 02.
  • He transported his family and settled in Chester Co, PA, where
  • he died in September, 1734;
  • his wife died in 1738;
  • both buried at Nottinghan Meeting House in Chester Co, PA.
