About Katherine Mompesson
Katherine St John was the eldest daughter [note in her memorial & she is listed first in her father's] of John St John and his wife Lucy Hungerford. In the painting of the six daughters, she is on the far right, as the eldest.
She married in 1607 to Sir Giles Mompesson [later much disgraced]
"Sacred to the memory of the best of women, the lady Katherine Mompesson, peerless in beauty, chastity, constancy, piety and every form of virtue, the eldest sister of John St John of Lydiard Tregoze, Baronet, and dearest wife of Giles Mompesson of the ancient family of Bathampton in the county of Wiltshire, knight. This Giles, fully mindfull of twenty-six years of happy married life (being still alive) has made this tomb, where he has given orders for his ashes to be laid ( when the day shall come) . She died on 28 March 1633." [It is not known if Sir Giles Mompesson was laid to rest there when he died]
"Heere lieth the body of Sir John St John, Knight who maried Lucy daughter & co heire
of Sir Walter Hungerford of Farley, Knight by whom he had issue Walter that died young
Sir John St John Knight & Baronet, Oliver that died young Katherine Anne Jane Elinor Barbara
Lucy & Martha that died a child. He deceased the 20 of September 1594. She was secondly maried to
Sir Anthony Hungerford Knight by whom she had Edward Bridget and Jane & then died the 4 of June 1598
This was erected by Sir John St John Knight & Baronet in the year of our Lord 1615 the 20 of Jul"
